"So What?" Pt. 3

I. Paul wanted the believers in Philippi to learn an important truth; from his own experience, his incarceration was proof that there are no accidents with God! Instead of his ministry of the Gospel being stifled by his incarceration, it was actually being advanced.
II. For Paul, knowing that others were preaching Jesus, who considered themselves to be his rivals, and that in preaching the Gospel, they could cause Paul even more heartache, he chose to respond with a joyful, “So what? Christ is being preached, and in that, I find joy!”
III. Paul had an understanding that more Pastor’s and preachers need today: the message preached is more important than the man bringing the message!
IV. “You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time!”--Abraham Lincoln.

V. If you speak even the hard truth of God’s Word in such a way as to show loving concern, you will find that those to whom you speak that truth will grow in spiritual maturity to the point where they, too, speak the truth lovingly to others!
VI. Paul is saying, “Who cares if there are people out there preaching Jesus, hoping that in some way it can be used against me, or maybe even people who somehow find amusement in my suffering? They’re the ones who are suffering, if they find joy at someone else’s expense! So what?”
VII. In Philippi, there were people preaching Jesus, and Him crucified, but who were doing it from a wrong motivation, that is, to attempt to make Paul miserable!
VIII. When we get our image caught up in the proclamation of truth, we are preaching Christ with wrong motives!
IX. Paul knows that Christ is going to be exalted, if not in his life, then through his death; he’s not ignorant, for he realizes his death may be imminent.
X. When Jesus is the center of one’s life, as the storms, and disappointments, and shattering experiences of one’s life occur, He is in place within the individual! That person then doesn’t need someone else to help them feel whole, or something else to bring them happiness, or joy!
XI. Joy is a choice! The result of a decision that one makes! If there is any “pursuit” in it, it’s an internal “pursuit”, an inner journey that leads one to joy in spite of the circumstances!
XII. Three concepts that need our focus: circumstances, other people, and the future; these represent three things that can cause people either happiness or disappointment.
1. When Christ is the center, He broadens the dimensions of my circumstances.
2. When Christ is the center, He delivers me from preoccupation with others.
3. When Christ is the center, He calms my fears of the future.
