Matthew 5:43-6:18- Father’s Day
Becoming Like Our Father
In our text I want us to recognize four actions God wants Christians to perform to be more like Him.
I. First, God wants us to love our enemies.
A. What some say
B. What God says
C. Why God says it
Ephesians 2:3-5- All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved.
D. Application
II. Second, God wants us to be perfect.
A. Summary statement
Leviticus 19:2- "Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: 'Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.’”
B. Called to godliness
Philippians 3:12-14- Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
C. Perfection provided
Colossians 1:28- We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.
D. Application
III. Third, God wants us to give Him glory.
A. Example 1- Don’t do righteous acts before men.
B. Example 2- Give in secret.
C. Example 3- Pray in secret.
D. Example 4- Fast in secret.
E. Why must we act in secret?
Isaiah 48:10-11- See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. For my own sake, for my own sake, I do this. How can I let myself be defamed? I will not yield my glory to another.
John 17:4- I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.
F. Application
IV. Fourth, God wants us to be forgiving.
A. The Father forgives
B. We are to follow the Father
Ephesians 4:32- Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
C. Application
