The Seven Churches of Revelation Series
-The church in Philadelphia was established by Paul in Acts 19 when he was in Ephesus. Ignatius would pass through it on his way to martyrdom in Rome. History bears out the fact that some of the saints in Philadelphia died with Polycarp in Smyrna because of his stand for the faith.
-The church in Philadelphia was such a solid church that it stood for centuries. In fact it lasted until the 14th century before it disappeared from history being cut down in the onslaught of the Muslims.
Founded around 189 B.C.
About 30 miles from Sardis
It was a center of Greek culture and language
It was established so it could reach out to the regions around and spread its culture
Located on the edge of a large volcanic region
Because of the volcanic ash, it had very fertile soil that was good for vineyards
Around 17 A.D. an earthquake almost destroyed the city and Caesar sent in his finances and engineers to help rebuild it
-This what the church in Philadelphia was made up of.
2 Kings 19:22 KJV Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
Job 6:10 KJV Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
Psalms 71:22 KJV I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel.
Psalms 78:41 KJV Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.
Isaiah 43:15 KJV I am the LORD, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.
Isaiah 54:5 KJV For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.
-From a doctrinal standpoint, we must realize that the God of the Old Testament who identified Himself as the Holy One, is one and the same in Jesus Christ, who identifies Himself as the Holy One in the New Testament.
Mark 1:24 KJV Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
Luke 1:35 KJV And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Acts 3:14 KJV But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;
-Not only is the description of the Lord that of holy, it is also one of Him being true. He is genuine, authentic, and real. This description follows throughout the Revelation as well (6:10; 15:3; 16:7; 19:2, 11).
-He is also described as one who has a key. In the last message, it was noted that in the church in Sardis that garments were symbolic of character. The key that is mentioned here represents authority. Whoever has the key has complete control of the situation:
Matthew 16:19—The church has keys of authority through church discipline.
Revelation 1:18—The Lord has the keys of death and hell.
Revelation 9:1; 20:1—The Lord has the key to the bottomless pit.
Hebrews 10:20—The Lord holds the keys of salvation.
Revelation 3:10—The Lord holds the key to the door of safety. He will
keep us in the hour of temptation.
Acts 16:14—The Lord holds the key to the heart of men.
Luke 24:32—The Lord holds the key to the door of the Scriptures.
-But this key that is mentioned here is the key of David. It is simply affirming that there will come a day when the Lord will rule from a royal throne that has come down through the lineage of David. He will rule the world because He has sovereign control over it.
Ephesus—Had lost its first love.
Pergamos—Was tolerating false doctrine and sin
Thyatira—Allowing sin to run rampant and unchecked through the church
Sardis—A dead church that thought they were alive
-Philadelphia is a church that we need to strive to be. Not just corporately as a church body but there are character qualities here that we need to be pursuing after individually in our lives as well.
-The Lord commended them for four things:
1. They had a little strength.
-The expression that is used here is not bearing so much on their spiritual strength as it has to do with their number. It was a small church numerically but it was a powerhouse of great proportions.
-The constituents of this church were largely slaves. It was even more so than all of the other churches. It would have been a group of people that were shamed and mocked because of their social standing in society. Being poor and from the lower classes, it would have been difficult for them to evangelize the upper crust of their society.
-Remember Paul’s words. . .
1 Corinthians 1:24-29 KJV But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. [25] Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. [26] For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: [27] But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; [28] And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: [29] That no flesh should glory in his presence.
-But great spiritual power poured out of them!
2. They had kept His word.
-Philadelphia was a church that kept His Word. This is itself is a very valuable commendation even if there weren’t any others. To keep the Word means that you receive the Word well. They had no wish to hear anything else!
They read it.
They guarded it.
They hoarded it in their memory.
They let it control their emotions.
They used it in their everyday life.
They practiced it.
They memorized it.
They meditated on it.
They paid close attention to it.
They made it their own.
Charles Spurgeon—Men do not keep things which they consider to be valueless. If men in our own day had a higher opinion of truth they would be more valiant for it. People are always ready to part with that for which they have no esteem, and for this very reason may quite willingly give up the Bible to critics and philosophers, those footpads (robbers) and burglars of faith. But he that keeps God’s Word, we may be sure is deeply in love with it.
-The Lord pays close attention to those people who value the Word. We may have a little strength but we must keep His Word.
-A church that keeps the Word will want to listen to the Word. Listen to preaching with great discernment, not suspicion, but with weighty evaluation. Weigh the Word, reason with the Word, and incorporate the Word...
-The world will accuse you of being narrow-minded, pigheaded, and dogmatic. . . So be it. . . it keeps more wheat in the field than tares.
In Pilgrim’s Progress, John Bunyan writes of when Talkative came to Christian and Hopeful on their journey to the Celestial City. He talked and chattered on about a host of things. Finally, Christian and Hopeful got tired of his chattering and began to speak of godliness and their Christian experiences along their journey. It was at that point that Talkative took off and left them. He had no value for the Word. Those who keep the truth will find all sorts of scoundrels running from them. They will have no effect on your life.
Job 23:12 KJV Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
-To hold the Word and to be obedient to it is absolutely crucial!
John 14:23-24 KJV Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. [24] He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.
John 15:13-14 KJV Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. [14] Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
3. They did not deny His name.
-Despite the pressures to deny the name of the Lord, they did not do so! They were loyal no matter what the cost!
Revelation 14:12 KJV Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
-Everything within me wants to encourage you not to deny the name of the Lord.
Not with your mouth
Not with your actions
Not with sinful living
Not with harming the church
Not with stirring up strife
Not with living in a world of carnality
-Honor Him! Honor Him with everything you do. . . with your service, with your devotion, with your mouth, with your family, and with your calling!
4. They kept the patience—vv. 10a.
-The NIV says, You have kept my command to endure patiently.
-This means that they had steadfast endurance in the face of every obstacle and every foe. There was nothing that they allowed to hinder them in their walk and practice!
-There was a great commitment to perseverance. Perseverance is more than just having a mentality that says, “I am going to grit my teeth and make it through.” Perseverance is an understanding that there is an important purpose about my personal life and the mission of the church that we have been called into to serve.
-Perseverance looks beyond the circumstances that we may be allowing to color our judgement and outlook and see that there will be a prevailing victory beyond the present battle.
-The church in Philadelphia was commended because they were willing to see the big picture and not focus on the here and the now.
-An open door that no man can shut. It is a door of opportunity for service.
1 Corinthians 16:8-9 KJV But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost. [9] For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.
2 Corinthians 2:12 KJV Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
Colossians 4:2-3 KJV Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; [3] Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:
-That open door will cause the Lord to put those who are of the synagogue of Satan to bow down at their feet. But there is something even greater than that. . . The Lord has a great love for this church!
-The Lord said, these people claimed they were Jews but were not. Racially, culturally, and ceremonially they were Jews but spiritually they were not. . . There is a higher birth than a physical birth. . . This church is one that you have to be born into!
-When the Lord said they would bow down that meant they would do so in total defeat, submission, and subjection.
-But there is another benefit the Lord speaks to them. He said they would be kept in the hour of testing, the hour of temptation. . . The Lord promises to spare them of the ultimate test—the great tribulation.
-There are three great rapture passages in the NT—John 14:1-4; 1 Cor. 15:51-54; and 1 Thess. 4:13-17. There is nothing of judgment that is mentioned in any of them. It speaks of the church being taken to heaven.
-So the Lord promises that during this testing time:
It is in the future
It is limited—an hour of testing
It will expose people for what they really are
It will be worldwide in scope
It is a test for those on earth (this phrase is used as a technical term in Revelation for unbelievers—6:10; 8:13; 11:10; 13:8; 13:12; 13:14; 14:6; 17:2; 17:8).
-When is the hour of testing? Daniel’s Seventieth Week (Dan. 9:25-27) and during Jacob’s Trouble (Jer. 30:7).
-But we also see that there is a symbol here—a pillar that will be in the Temple of God. A pillar is a symbol of strength, support, durability, permanence, immortality, and could even be seen as a monument.
-The Lord is telling this church that will have a permanent residence and will never have to leave the city in order to be safe. They will be free from this sinful and corruptible world for eternity!
-But there is more! The Lord promises to them a name which means that the child of God, the tested saint, will belong to God. If you are aware of the passing fad and fancy of this world, that ought to make you long for even greater commitment than what you have ever known.
-Why do you hold fast? Because all through Scripture there are multiple warnings a church and individual believers can lose their crown, they can backslide and be lost! Hold fast that which you have and what has been delivered to you!
THE GOAL OF EVERY PERSON
-All of these matters that we have noticed in this passage of Scripture should be traits that we are constantly pursuing in our walk with the Lord.
A church that wasn’t alarmed by how small it was but how spiritually healthy they were.
They held fast to the Word.
They did not deny the name of the Lord.
They were a persevering church.
-All of these need to be incorporated into our walk with the God!
God created humanity to have fellowship with Him, but humans defied God by sinfully living life their own way. To rectify this, we need God's saving grace to end our separation from Him.
As the Bible teaches, we believe that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by works. Faith in Jesus is the means by which a person is justified. At the same time, a sinner must:
- Believe the gospel;
- Repent of his sinful life;
- Be baptized in water in the name of Jesus Christ;
- And receive the gift of the Holy Spirit with the initial sign of speaking with other tongues. (Acts 2:38; 4:12; 8:12-17; 10:43-48; 19:1-6)
The various aspects of faith and obedience work together in God's grace to reconcile us to God.
