SERMON: Acts 11:19-30 “Nickname”

“What made for a nickname to be given to the believers in Antioch?”

1. The Work of Good Men

2. The Work of a Good Church

3. The Work of a Great God

“Grace is the way to the Christian’s name.”
APPLICATION QUESTIONS:
1. Have you ever been given a nickname? Share with the group what these may have been. What was the nickname applied to the believers in this text? Read the following texts and find encouragement in other titles applied by the Bible to designate believers. How do they encourage us? Acts 12:5; Romans 1:7, 8:17; Ephesians 2:19; Colossians 1:2; Titus 1:1; Hebrews 2:1; 1 Peter 2:10; 1 John 3:1.
2. Review the following Scriptures. What is the underlying component or principle that should serve to unite us in the work of His kingdom? How is this worked out today in our setting? Deuteronomy 15:7-8; Matthew 25:40, Luke 19:8; Acts 4:34-35, 20:35; 2 Corinthians 8:1-5, 9; 2 Corinthians 9:7; Galatians 2:10; 1 John 3:17-18.
3. All the way through Acts thus far we have witnessed one of two results to the proclamation of the Gospel. What are the two ways people respond to the truth of the Gospel? Does there appear to be any “in between”? Why is this response so important? Matthew 11:28, 13:22; John 12:37-41; Acts 7:51-53, 13:38-39, 16:29-32; Hebrews 12:25.
4.The word of God often speaks to the need to persevere in the faith we are saved into (Acts 11:23b). Read the following texts and describe how the Bible describes standing firm in the faith. What does this imply for our daily lives? Matthew 24:12-13; John 15:4-10; Acts 13:43; Romans 5:3; 1 Corinthians 15:58; Colossians 2:6-7; Revelation 3:11.
5. Verse 23 contains a very pregnant and powerful phrase, “witnessed the grace of God” and is indicated as the proof positive sign to Barnabas that God’s work of salvation certainly extending to the Gentiles as well. Let’s reflect for a time on the phrase “grace of God”. What does it mean, and what does it imply for a person’s life? What does it mean corporately for a church family? How is “the grace of God” witnessed in your own life and in the life of this congregation?
