“Charisma” – gift of grace

1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant

“Spiritual” in the Greek is the word “Pneumatikos” – empowered by breath or wind

3 categories of gifts:
- Motivational gifts – Rom. 12
- Ministry gifts – Eph. 4
- Manifestation gifts – 1 Cor. 12 – gifts of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:7-11 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each onefor the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

No one person has these gifts, the Holy Spirit has these gifts. And He distributes them as He wills for the profit of all.

Manifestation means “to make known”

The Holy Spirit manifests, makes these known through each person as He wills for the profit of all

There are 9 manifestation gifts of the Holy Spirit:

1. The Discerning Gifts
Word of Knowledge – to know something specific without having learned it by natural means
- Jesus had a word of knowledge for the women at the well in John 4.

Word of Wisdom – a divine answer or solution for a particular event
John 9:30; 32-33 –30 The man answered and said to them, “Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! 32 Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. 33 If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.”
- The Holy Spirit spoke to him a word of wisdom

When we come across problems and issues that we don’t have the answer to, we can take that to prayer and let the Holy Spirit give us words of wisdom, divine answers to those solutions!

Discerning of Spirits – to be made aware of the presence of a demonic spirit
Acts 16 – Paul and the fortune teller with the evil spirit

2. The Declarative Gifts
Prophecy – A message of encouragement from God through a person
The spiritual, New Testament gift of prophecy is for encouragement

1 Corinthians 14:31 –31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged.

Tongues – A message from God in a language unknown to the person through whom the message comes

This is not the prayer language, which we’ll talk about next week, this is the gift or manifestation of tongues

Interpretation of Tongues – Understanding and expressing the thought or the intent of the message in tongues

This is not translation, which is word for word. This is the interpretation – expressing the thought or intent of the message.

1 Corinthians 14:5 – 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

The one who prophesies is doing a greater work because he’s edifying the body, unless it’s interpreted. Because if it’s interpreted, then it’s the same, because it’s also edifying the body.

3. The Dynamic Gifts
Acts 1:8 – “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…”

“Power” in the Greek is “dunamis” – explosive power. This is from where we get the English word dynamite.

Faith – a supernatural impartation of belief and confidence for a specific situation

This isn’t faith in general, this is a manifestation gift of the Holy Spirit for specific situations.

When you are going through a challenging time, do you want the Holy Spirit to give you faith that you’re going to get through it?
-The Holy Spirit is good and His gifts are good!

Gifts of Healings – supernatural endowments of divine health

No one person has the “gift of healing.” The Holy Spirit has the gift of healing.

Working of Miracles – divine intervention that alters our natural circumstances

John 14:12 12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also;"

Because the Holy Spirit’s coming and He has all these works in Him

John 16:7 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

Every one of us can have a close relationship with the Holy Spirit now, and the Holy Spirit will give these gifts of grace to every person who will receive them.
