I. JESUS KNEW YOU BEFORE YOU EVER KNEW HIM
1. Vs 40-41
2. Vs 42
a) “looked” – means to discern clearly!!! To study. Beyond the physical.
b) “You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).
3. Jesus penetrating omniscient look saw not merely Simon but also the man He would mold him into.
4. Peter was a sort of nickname meaning “moveable Rock” – petros
5. Cf. Matthew 16:13ff
a) Peter – petros – means a piece of stone
b) Rock – Petra – a massive immovable stone. Ie. Mount Rushmore
6. Gal 1:15
a) God knew us even from the womb.
7. Jeremiah 1:5
a) Here we read that God knew us even before conception.
8. Vs 42
a) “You .”
b) “You shall be called Cephas.”
1) This is what we call a prophetic future tense.
2) Jesus was looking at Peter and seeing what he would become.
c) GOOD STUFF: “You will be called Peter and you will become what you will be called.”
9. Jesus looked at Peter and saw a potential and possibility that was there. Jesus saw what he could become.

II. JESUS FOUND YOU BEFORE YOU FOUND HIM

1) Which means “Follow me” and keep following me. Never stop.
2. The name Philip was a Greek name.
a) “Bethsaida” – was known as “Galilee of the Gentiles”
1) In 722 BC the Assyrians took the Northern 10 tribes captive and relocated Gentiles in this area of Galilee.
2) Bethsaida was located about 12 O’clock north on the sea of Galilee.
b) Philip was a facts and figures kind of guy.

a) Man’s not going to heaven without Jesus choosing him. Sovereignty
b) And man’s not going to heaven without choosing Jesus. Free will

a) Nathaniel knew the O.T. scriptures.

a) “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?”

a) “Jesus saw Nathaniel coming toward him as said”
1) Means – to look and to peer into. To study.
b) “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit”
c) Jesus said, “Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no Jacob”

b) “Jesus answered him, ‘Before Philip called you when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
