In thoroughbred horse racing, the ultimate measure of success is the Triple Crown. The feat involves winning three races in three states in the same year: The Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes in Maryland and the Belmont Stakes in New York. Only twelve horses have ever accomplished the feat. The first was Sir Barton in 1919, the last was American Pharaoh in 2015 and perhaps the most famous was Secretariat in 1973.
I want to introduce you to a different kind of Triple Crown winner today: Benaiah ben Jehoiada from Kabzeel; ever heard of him? He is not likely the most recognizable figure from the ancient text of the Old Testament but he is one of the most interesting and inspiring. And his life did feature a close encounter with a lion. More importantly, Benaiah’s life story teaches us how to tackle the tough tasks of life.
We all have them; the tough tasks, the formidable challenges, the problems or difficulties that make life difficult and unmanageable. Sometimes we don’t actually tackle the tough tasks; they tackle us and terrorize and intimidate us so that we miss out on the best God has for us.
Let’s take a look into the life of this giant slayer and lion tamer named Benaiah and see what we can learn about growing great for God and tackling the tough tasks of life.

“Are you living your life in a way that is worth telling stories about? Maybe it is time to quit running and time to start chasing. Try something new. Take some risks. Start doing some things that are worth recounting in jaw-dropping detail. I think we owe it to our kids and grandkids. Imagine the bedtime stories Benaiah must have told his children.”
