Today, on Easter Sunday, we are going learn how to- Rise above our Brokenness!
Jesus may have been broken but he is also Risen! How about you?
Matthew 28:1-10 (NIV)
"After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. 5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” 8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”
Someone once said - "The tomb of Christ is the only tomb in history that is famous for of what it DOES NOT CONTAIN!"
The resurrection of Jesus was never meant to be a Story. It was meant to be an Experience!
The apostle Paul declared in:
Philippians 3:10-11 (NIV)
"I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead."
+ Interestingly, Paul states in this passage that he wants to know Christ, and the Power of his resurrection.
(The word Know used here, means to experience!)
+ I could be all wrong, but it seems like it is much easier for people like you and me to relate to the suffering and death of Jesus, than it is to his Resurrection. Why???
+ Maybe it's because we've seen a whole lot more funerals in this life, than resurrections.
(Relationships die, Dreams die, Marriages die, Loved ones die...etc!)
+ But - Paul wanted more than suffering and death, He also wanted a resurrection . If I've got to go through all of the bad stuff, I want the good stuff too!
Did you realize that Jesus is not the only one who was supposed to have a resurrection? You were too!
John 11:25-26 (NKJV)
"Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, shall never die. Do you believe this?"
Romans 8:11 (NIV)
"And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you."
*The problem is, only a few of us have been resurrected above our circumstance, above our situation, above our trauma, above our crisis and above our dilemma.
The Bible tells us in the gospels, that all of us have a cross to bear in this life. The only difference between Jesus and the rest of us is that He decided not to stay on His!
> Jesus may have been betrayed by Judas in the garden- But He didn't stay there!
>Jesus may have been denied by Peter in the courtyard- But He didn't stay there!
>Jesus may have been brutally beaten at the whippin post- But He didn't stay there!
>Jesus may have been nailed to a cross on Good Friday- But He didn't stay there!
>Our Jesus may have been buried in a tomb- But we all know He didn't stay there!
***He may have been Broken, but He is also Risen!!!***
The story of Jesus didn't end at His cross, and yours shouldn't either!
Some of you know the Power of His resurrection, and have seen God bring you out of things, that you have no idea how you ever got out of. But some of you are still buried!
God never assigns a Cross, without arranging a Resurrection!
(It's time to Rise!!!)
T.D. Jakes said- "Salvation might be the root, but your resurrection is the fruit!"
- When are you going to get off your Cross?
- When are you going to come out of your Grave?
- When are you going to rise above your Brokenness?
Jesus declared in:
John 8:36
"So if the son sets you free, you will be free indeed."
Some of you only know brokenness, because you have never been resurrected!
Whatchman Nee - (Took it a step further and said) "Our old history ends with the cross; our new history begins with the resurrection."
(You have a BC and an AD)
Paul tells us in:
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
Jesus brought all of history to zero and started it over. He can do the same for you!
The only reason some of your past is still being counted, is because you still haven't been resurrected!.
Romans 6:1-4 (NIV)
"What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."
Today I want to share with you 3 powerful things that the Resurrection gives us:
(1) The Resurrection gives us Victory over Death!
(Death died when Jesus rose!)
Colossians 2:13-15 (NIV)
"When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you[a] alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross."
Toni Amos -"Before we can see the cross as something done for us, we must see it as something done by us."
(2) The Resurrection gives us Power for Life!
(Because he rose, I now can rise!)
John 16:33 (NIV)
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
1 John 4:4 (NKJV)
"You are of God... and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
(3) The Resurrection gives us Hope for the Future!
(He was broken, But is Risen!)
The Bible records a powerful story about Jesus resurrecting his friend Lazarus, who had died and was in a tomb:
John 11:38-44 (NIV)
"Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39 “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” 40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
+ The story of Lazarus represents all of us, who at times have been buried in our sin.
+ Jesus gives three very distinct commands regarding Lazarus' resurrection:
1. Roll away the Stone- Some of us can't see a way out, so we've just quit trying!
2. Come out- Some of us have been free to go, but we've chosen to stay in our grave!
3.Take off your grave clothes- Some of us have been resurrected but we still look, act, and walk dead! (When Jesus left the tomb he left his grave clothes behind!)
Just like He called Lazarus by name, today He is calling you to leave your grave!
Jesus may have been broken but he is also Risen! How about you?
