Resurrection Questions: Why did Jesus Have to Die so Terribly?

Welcome to First Southern where we exist to help people follow Jesus. Following Jesus is a bloody trail. The cross was at best “R” rated due to the violence and humiliation suffered by our Savior. The treatment of Jesus prior to the cross, was equally as humiliating, but on that cross the wrath of God against sin was focused like a magnifying glass concentrates the sun’s rays in one location… Calvary. And on one of the three crosses hung there that day the focal point of all the wrath of God against the sinless Lamb, and the suffering was beyond comprehension.

1 Peter 1:18–19 (HCSB) For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.

Matthew 27:27-29 “Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!”

Deuteronomy 21:22-23, “And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: his body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God)….”

“My soul, stand here and weep over his poor stricken body. Believer in Jesus, can you gaze upon him without tears, as he stands before you the mirror of agonizing love? He is at once fair as the lily for innocence, and red as the rose with the crimson of his own blood. As we feel the sure and blessed healing which his stripes have wrought in us, does not our heart melt at once with love and grief? If ever we have loved our Lord Jesus, surely we must feel that affection glowing now within our bosoms.” Charles Spurgeon.” Charles Spurgeon
