COMMENTARY | JESUS HAS BEEN NAILED TO THE CROSS BETWEEN TWO THIEVES

INTRODUCTION | WHEN WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT YOU HAD FAITH IN GOD?

STATEMENT | I remember it was when I was 10 years old. I had grown up hearing about the stories of Jesus in the Bible. I had seen the virtues and values of the Jesus lived out in the lives of my parents and grand parents. But it wasn't until I realized that my faith in Jesus had more to do with me than with God. God had always been there waiting to save me from myself. It was when I surrendered my faith in myself for a faith in the power of God, that I truly became free.

FAITH | THE POWER OF FAITH REALIZED THROUGH JESUS ON THE CROSS

TEXT | LUKE 23:32-43 NLT 32 Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him. 33 When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left.
34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.
35 The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine. 37 They called out to him, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 A sign was fastened above him with these words: “This is the King of the Jews.”
39 One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!”
40 But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? 41 We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”
43 And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

FAITH | DEFINED

Commentary | What is faith…the Bible states that in Hebrews 11:1 NLT 11 Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see. The greek word for faith is pisteuo which means I believe, have faith in, trust in; pass: I am entrusted with.

4100. pisteuó Strong's Concordance pisteuó: to believe, entrust Original Word: πιστεύω Part of Speech: Verb Transliteration: pisteuó Phonetic Spelling: (pist-yoo'-o) Short Definition: I believe, have faith in DEFINITION | I believe, have faith in, trust in; pass: I am entrusted with.

Commentary | Today I want to explore the effects that having faith in Jesus in three everyday areas of our lives. They are mind, body, and soul. Before you go and get your yoga mat I need to put this on context of the what does the bible say about your mind, body, and soul.

MIND | The word mind has at least 11 slightly varying meanings but the most common word can be found in Romans 12:2 where the Apostle Paul states, “2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2 NASB The word for mind in koine greek is nous the God-given capacity of each person to think (reason); the mind; mental capacity to exercise reflective thinking. For the believer, 3563 (noús) is the organ of receiving God's thoughts, through faith.

BODY | The word body is soma it means 4983 sṓma – the physical body. 4983 (sṓma) is also used figuratively of the mystical Body of Christ (= the Church, the one people of God). Soma is found in Matthew 6:25 (NASB) 25 “For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

SOUL | The word soul is psuche. It can be found in Matthew 10:28 NASB 28 Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. The word psyche (from psyxō, means "to breathe, blow" which is the root of the English words "psyche," "psychology") – soul (psyche); a person's distinct identity (unique personhood), i.e. individual personality. 5590 (psyxē) corresponds exactly to the OT 5315 /phágō ("soul"). The soul is the direct aftermath of God breathing (blowing) His gift of life into a person, making them an ensouled being.

Commentary | Transition | Now that we have a contextual understanding of the mind, body, and soul. I want to talk about how faith in Jesus directly effects each of these three very important parts of who we are as human beings.

FAITH | MIND | NOUS

MATTHEW 8:5-13 NLT 5 When Jesus returned to Capernaum, a Roman officer came and pleaded with him, 6 “Lord, my young servant lies in bed, paralyzed and in terrible pain.”7 Jesus said, “I will come and heal him.” 8 But the officer said, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. 9 I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”

10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to those who were following him, he said, “I tell you the truth, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel! 11 And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world—from east and west—and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven. 12 But many Israelites—those for whom the Kingdom was prepared—will be thrown into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
13 Then Jesus said to the Roman officer, “Go back home. Because you believed, it has happened.” And the young servant was healed that same hour.
Commentary | This is an incredible story of faith in Jesus and how it effected the mind/nous of the Roman officer. Because of his experience with leadership and his mind acknowledging Jesus as a person with great power and leadership he had a confident faith that Jesus would do just as the Roman officer would have done. What I love about this passage is Jesus’ response… Matthew 8:10-11 NLT “10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to those who were following him, he said, “I tell you the truth, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel! 11 And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world—from east and west—and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Let’s take another look at Romans 12:2 NASB where the Apostle Paul states, “2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” Pay close attention to the phrase, “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” I believe that when you exercise your faith or belief in Jesus Christ it will change how you look at life circumstances. You will as the Roman officer did, actually see Jesus for who he really was and is. The king of Heaven who has great power to do anything that God the father wills him to do. You can actually trust him.

FAITH | BODY | SOMA

MARK 5:21-34 NLT 21 Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. 22 Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, 23 pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.”
24 Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him. 25 A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. 26 She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. 27 She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. 28 For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition.
30 Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?”
31 His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’”
32 But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.”
Commentary | How many of us go to a doctor to help us feel better from a cold or when you need surgery to help correct a damaged muscle? We all do. God has given us the ability as humans to begin the healing process and he has designed our bodies to heal. So if we can trust a doctor to give us medicine or surgery to repair damage why do we have such a hard time with faith when it comes to God healing the bodies that he created. I must caution you that the will of God which is something we may not be able to fully understand is at play when we come to this topic. There has been great abuse to this topic of faith healing. I believe that God can heal but doesn’t always do that for reason I can’t understand on this side of heaven. But I can also say that I have physically seen God heal people.

Here we find in Mark 5 a woman who had been suffering at the hands of doctors for 12 years. I am sure that she had almost given up. But here comes Jesus and she had faith that if she could simply touch the hem of his rob that she could be healed. I love this because it teaches is that faith in Jesus gives rise to physical action…she had faith and then she touched Jesus’ rob. Because of this Jesus responds, Mark 5:32-34 NLT “32 But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.” Wow! Could you imagine her relief? God had answered her faith through Jesus.

My purpose for this is that your faith in Jesus is not limited to your mind but also to your body. When you have faith in Jesus amazing things can happen to you. God created you. I just want to caution you again that God has given these bodies and he wants us to take care of them…1 Corinthians 6:19:20 states, “19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. Let take a look at your spirit, which brings us to the final point of this faith discussion and Jesus on the cross with the two thieves.

FAITH | SOUL | PSUCHE

TEXT | LUKE 22:32-43 NLT 32 Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him.

Commentary | The thief on the cross was saved from eternal separation from God because of his faith in Jesus. The thief had faith that Jesus was who he had said he was. At this point he couldn’t have relied on religion to save him…nothing could save him but faith in the grace of God. Ephesians 2:1-10 states, 1 Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 2 You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. 3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.
4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) 6 For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. 7 So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

CONCLUSION | REVIEW MIND BODY SPIRIT

Commentary | Every time we talk about the cross of Jesus Christ we can’t ignore the fact that the cross represents faith. Faith that God would do what he said he was going to do. That he was going to heal our mind, body, and soul and give humankind the opportunity to receive the gift of eternal life with Him. But it doesn’t end there. Faith in Jesus is not just a future tense kind of situation. It is found in the every day struggles and victories of a life found in Jesus. He went to the cross to suffer and die for our sins and for the two thieves that were being crucified beside him. My prayer for you today is to reflect and act upon the faith that God has given you through the Bible and the community of those that follow Jesus. Put your faith into practice and you will not be disappointed.
