hey

Save the date and invite someone to join us for Easter!

hey
This psalm shows real life reactions to stressful situations from someone who was a believer. It’s not sugar coated or fake reality, but a real believer saying a real heart felt, albeit unique prayer.
Psalm 142, much like most of David’s that was written when he was in distress.

We all seem to pray extra hard when we’re in distress.

Psalms 142:1-7

I. Who wrote it?
We know from the title it was written by David. We know from scripture that David was described as a man after God’s own heart. He was far from perfect, but even in all his misadventures and sin, God still refers to him that way.
II. When was it written?
It is curious, that a lot of psalms do not give you the author and most do not tell you when or why it was written.

However, this one does both. I believe that this was specific on God’s part so we could fully appreciate David’s situation.
III. Where was it written?
Scripture tells us this psalm was written in a cave. There were 2 unique times when David was recorded being in a cave.

One was at En Gedi when he was being chased by Saul and it was in this cave when he was able to cut off a corner of Saul’s robe and get back out.

The other was when we he was in the cave at Adullam again being chased by Saul, but this time it was at the beginning of the chase and he was alone. It was during this time that he acquired his friends to help.

The second seems more in line with the prayer David is praying in Psalm 142.
Let's recap David's situation at this point...
~ David had just been warned by Jonathan that Saul was going to kill him.
~ He leaves his home town with nothing but the clothes on his back.
~ He goes to city called Nob - to Ahimelech the priest asking for his help.
~ He then runs to Gath to see their king. However when he is there, he hears the people talking about him and fears for his life.
~ He pretends to be insane so they won’t kill him.
~ He leaves Gath receiving no help.

That brings us to 1 Samuel 22:1...

1 Samuel 22:1

So now we find David in the middle of a dark, musty cave.

He’s being chased by his father figure, the dad of his best friend who wants him dead. No one is helping him.

Everything in his life is falling apart.

Ever been there?

Psalms 142:1

Psalm 142:1

Like David, maybe you are in a situation where you see no end in sight, no help, nothing that will ever change your circumstance.

“I am begging you.” Please help me.

We have all been there. Something in your life is beyond your control. There is nothing that you or anyone else can do to help.

You are crying out to the only one who can help.

Psalms 142:2

Psalms 142:3

We need to say-God you need to show me the right thing to do. My thinking isn’t rational right now; I need you to objectively help me.

Give me the mind of Christ.

Psalms 142:3

Psalm 142:3

The God of heaven knows your way. When your spirit is fainting inside of you, God knows your way. He knows your situation perfectly.

Part of the blessings of following Jesus is the assurance that He knows and cares about your life.

Hebrews 4:14-16

Psalms 142:3

Psalm 142:3

God will make a way where there seems to be no way...how does the song go?

God will make a way where there seems to be no way. He works in ways we cannot see, he will make a way for me.

Mark 10:27

God has specific promises for each of us. Sometimes they take a long time to receive them, but they are there.

God promised peace in the storm and encouragement along the way. But sometimes you don’t feel that way.

All part of faith is a belief that God can do the impossible. He can do something even when we think he can’t.

Psalms 142:4

Psalms 142:5

When none of our friends can help, and no one understands and no one will be honest with us, we can say...
hey
We all know what God says about things, but sometimes those truths get buried by our discouragement and despair.
Allow God to be a refuge to you.

Then we can get to the point where we say.

“You are all I really want in life.”
In his mind, David’s life was on the line, but if he had Jesus then he had everything.

If you had Jesus and nothing else, would that be enough?

If that is enough, then your temporary problems would seem smaller.

Psalms 142:6

Saul held all the cards. He had the army, the power, the authority. They were too strong for David.

Even in the natural, when they appeared too strong, David still prayed for God to intervene.

He still believed that God was able to overcome a problem that in his mind was impossible.

He had the faith to believe that God could do it.

Psalms 142:7

Is your life so troubled that the only thing that you think about and keeps your attention 100 % of the time is your life? Your problem, your struggle, your circumstances?

The thing that you think is so insurmountable, so permanent, so time consuming is draining you of all joy or excitement or even just being happy.

Or maybe not so much being happy, just not being discouraged.

Once you allow God to release you from that prison of unending discouragement, you are able to praise God.

Psalms 142:7

The best encouragement is to hear someone tell you about how God intervened in their life and did a miracle or God helped them overcome some huge obstacle.

TESTIMONIES ARE POWERFUL!
What ever your situation, God wants you to unload on Him.

Because Peter tells us that we are to cast all our cares on him because he cares for you.

God promises to release you from the prison of discouragement, he promises you joy.
After David prayed this prayer, the Bible says that his brothers and relatives and friends and others came to him. And when it was done David had about 400 men who believed in Him and were willing to help him out.

Then he went to Moab and that town helped him out. He eventually became King.
