"I Am the Church"

"I Am the Church"

Dr. Robertson begins a new series of sermons today entitled, "i love my church." Preaching from Matthew 16:13-19, this morning he's exploring what it means to say, "I Am the Church." The church has never been the place but the people, not a building but a body. Therefore, we don't go to church...we are the church!

1. What does it mean to say, "I Am the Church?" It means, first, that I share in the confession of Jesus as personal Savior and Lord...
Jesus never intended for us to understand that He was building His church upon Peter, the man. Instead, when He said, "You are Peter and upon this rock I will build My church," Jesus was referring to the confession of faith Peter had just made. And still to this day, Jesus builds His church upon similar confessions of faith in Christ.
2. What does it mean to say, "I Am the Church?" It means, second, that I identify with Jesus' church...
The idea of being a member of the invisible church or the universal church without belonging to a local church is foreign to the Bible.
3. What does it mean to say, "I Am the Church?" It means, finally, that I embrace the responsibilities that Jesus gives to His church...
We have divine responsibilities to resist the devil and his minions and to be extensions of heaven on earth."…upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven" (18-19).
