Life Group Lesson for the Week of January 22, 2017

In a world that yearns for peace, we often hear the phrase, “But we are all children of God…” when in fact, the Bible says all are not. Indeed, humankind was created in the very image of God. But God’s Word is clear: “All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the LORD laid on Him the sins of us all” (Isaiah 53:6). Our way is a path that leads to eternal separation from the Father. Apart from God’s way, there is no peace, no Shalom with the Father.

Yet, God in His infinite love and mercy chose to make a way of restoration. God in His infinite wisdom knew the only way to save us from eternal separation was through His Son. Jesus Christ entered this broken world to pay a debt we could never pay. The Good News is now every person can become a child of God by believing in Jesus Christ. Peace is available to all—a peace that “exceeds anything we can understand (Philippians 4:7) and a peace this world cannot give (John 14:27). This is the glorious message God has given us to share with a fallen world.

Read Matthew 5:1-12

Since the Fall (Genesis 3) humanity is born into sin and persists in distancing ourselves from God’s presence. Through Adam’s sin and Eve’s rebellion in the Garden, our position as sons and daughters was lost, and peace (Shalom with our Father) was forfeited.

1. What do the following verses tell us about God’s peace (Shalom with our Father) and how it is restored? From these verses, specifically state: (1) Why sin entered the world and what was lost (2) What was the price to restore and who paid (3) The “proof” of victory and what is ultimately defeated

1 Corinthians 15:21-26 Colossians 1:18-22 1 Peter 1:18-23

Jesus says, “God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God” (v9). Understand, the peace Jesus speaks of is not the world’s definition of peace. This peace (Shalom with our Father) comes from heaven and commences upon the moment we profess faith in Christ. As Jesus told Nicodemus, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life” (John 3:5,6).

Jesus’ words in John 3:16 declare that God’s Shalom is available to all! “For God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” At Pentecost when the Holy Spirit birthed the church, Peter declared: “But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved” (Acts 2:21). Later the apostle Paul would tell young Timothy that God “wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4), and further explain as he wrote the church in Corinth: “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17) In his elderly years, Peter would remind believers that God “does not want anyone to be destroyed but wants everyone to repent” (2 Peter 3:9b). (Italics in references added)

2. Have you believed upon His name, the name of our Lord Jesus Christ? If so, in what ways are you experiencing a certain peace (the Shalom of God) that was not in your life prior to your profession of faith in Christ?

According to 2 Corinthians 5:18-21, what is the assignment believers (followers-of-Christ) take on once they accept God’s gift of salvation?

Close by reflecting upon the following verse. Write a personal note of thanks to God for His salvation. How will you begin to more fully demonstrate your gratitude for being offered the privilege of being a child of God?

“But to all who believed Him and accepted Him,
He gave the right to become children of God.”
John 1:12
