David
1 Samuel 17:17-24
•Victories are bound in the routine of obedience
•Why are we intimidated by what is a small thing compared to our God?

Goliath looked big. God is bigger.
•The longer you take to face your giants the more ground they will take (17:8, 17:25)
•External incentives don’t’ compare to internal motivation (17:26-27)
•You will get flak—“Older brother syndrome” (17:28)
oWhen you take a stand against a giant people will attack your motivation and character
oDavid ignores him and focuses on the mission
oChoose your battles wisely and remember Ephesians 6:12
•God uses our past (17:32-33,37)
•David fought the battle with what he knew 917:38-40)

The Battle
1 Samuel 17:41-54
•God magnifies His name when we are weak
•Major battle of intimidation (17:41-44)
•God’s part and David’s part worked together to glorify God. (17:45-26)
•The real giant is God!

Lessons to Remember
•Facing giants is intimidating when our focus is on the giant and not on Jesus. Remember Peter walking on water (Matthew 14:22-33)
•You alone must face your giants so that you can learn to trust Jesus.
•Trusting God brings peace to the most intimidating situations. (Isaiah 26:3; Proverbs 3:5-6)
•Remember the victories, they help you trust Jesus in the future.

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group.
•When was the last time you were really afraid?
•When was the last time you scared someone?

Start thinking. Ask questions to get your group thinking.
•If the Bible is the Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17), how well do you know how to handle it? What is your current skill level?
•What giants are currently in your life? Are you facing them daily or letting them take ground?
•Why do you need to face your giant alone? Does that mean no one can help you?

Start sharing. Choose questions that create openness.
•How have you taken flak from someone with “older brother syndrome”? Have you ever had “older broher syndrome”?
•When all eyes were on David, he gave a speech and he made it about the goodness of God. Take a moment to share about a victory you have had over a giant and give God the glory.

Start praying. Be bold, and pray with power.
•Jesus, teach me to focus on you and not my problems. Help me to learn the Bible so I can use it as skillfully as David used his sling against Goliath.
Start doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week.
•What is my plan to read through the Bible?
•What giant in my life am I going to attack today?
