DAY 346 OF 365

Hundreds of books, pamphlets, and seminars show us how to win others to Christ. Many of those ideas have merit. Yet we must not overlook a very simple but profound principle for winning people to the Lord. Both Jesus and John expound on it. The principle is love. In John's first epistle, chapter 4, he explores the significance and power of love. First, he says love comes from God, so any definition we give love must come from a proper concept of God. The creation of the universe and everything in it is an overflow of God's love. John then says but to show the full extent of His love, God sent His only Son into the world to offer us eternal life. God's love moved Him to sacrifice His Son to take away our sins. After explaining the source and nature of real love, John then explains how we should respond to such love. He says since God loved us, we surely ought to love each other. Then he makes this statement: No one has ever seen God. If we love one another, others will know God by seeing Him expressed through us. In other words, the best way to win others to Christ is by God's people showing love among themselves. Jesus likewise said, "Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples." That principle applies to individuals, churches, or ethnic groups. If we want to win people, we must show God's love among ourselves as well as to them.
