Psalms 55:20-22 - Compare All Versions
Psalms 55:20-23 MSG (The Message)
And this, my best friend, betrayed his best friends; his life betrayed his word. All my life I’ve been charmed by his speech, never dreaming he’d turn on me. His words, which were music to my ears, turned to daggers in my heart. Pile your troubles on GOD’s shoulders— he’ll carry your load, he’ll help you out. He’ll never let good people topple into ruin. But you, God, will throw the others into a muddy bog, Cut the lifespan of assassins and traitors in half.
Psalms 55:20-22 KJV (King James Version)
He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: He hath broken his covenant. The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: His words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords. Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
Psalms 55:20-22 NASB1995 (New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995)
He has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him; He has violated his covenant. His speech was smoother than butter, But his heart was war; His words were softer than oil, Yet they were drawn swords. Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
Psalms 55:20-22 NCV (New Century Version)
The one who was my friend attacks his friends and breaks his promises. His words are slippery like butter, but war is in his heart. His words are smoother than oil, but they cut like knives. Give your worries to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will never let good people down.
Psalms 55:20-22 ASV (American Standard Version)
He hath put forth his hands against such as were at peace with him: He hath profaned his covenant. His mouth was smooth as butter, But his heart was war: His words were softer than oil, Yet were they drawn swords. Cast thy burden upon Jehovah, and he will sustain thee: He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.
Psalms 55:20-22 NIV (New International Version)
My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant. His talk is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords. Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
Psalms 55:20-22 NKJV (New King James Version)
He has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him; He has broken his covenant. The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, But war was in his heart; His words were softer than oil, Yet they were drawn swords. Cast your burden on the LORD, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.
Psalms 55:20-22 AMP (Amplified Bible)
He [my companion] has put out his hands against those who were at peace with him; He has broken his covenant [of friendship and loyalty]. The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, But his heart was hostile; His words were softer than oil, Yet they were drawn swords. ¶Cast your burden on the LORD [release it] and He will sustain and uphold you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken (slip, fall, fail). [1 Pet 5:7]
Psalms 55:20-22 NLT (New Living Translation)
As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises. His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers! Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.
Psalms 55:20-22 TPT (The Passion Translation)
I was betrayed by my friend, though I lived in peace with him. While he was stretching out his hand of friendship, he was secretly breaking every promise he had ever made to me! His words were smooth and charming. Yet his heart was disloyal and full of hatred— his words soft as silk while all the time scheming my demise. So here’s what I’ve learned through it all: Leave all your cares and anxieties at the feet of the Lord, and measureless grace will strengthen you.
Psalms 55:20-22 ESV (English Standard Version 2025)
My companion stretched out his hand against his friends; he violated his covenant. His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords. Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
