Proverbs 10:19-22 - Compare All Versions

Proverbs 10:19-22 NIV (New International Version)

Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value. The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of sense. The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, without painful toil for it.

Proverbs 10:19-22 ESV (English Standard Version 2025)

When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; the heart of the wicked is of little worth. The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of sense. The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

Proverbs 10:19-22 NLT (New Living Translation)

Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. The words of the godly are like sterling silver; the heart of a fool is worthless. The words of the godly encourage many, but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense. The blessing of the LORD makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

Proverbs 10:19-22 CSB (Christian Standard Bible)

When there are many words, sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his lips is prudent.  The tongue of the righteous is pure silver; the heart of the wicked is of little value.  The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of sense.  The LORD’s blessing enriches,  and he adds no painful effort to it.

Proverbs 10:19-22 KJV (King James Version)

In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: But he that refraineth his lips is wise. The tongue of the just is as choice silver: The heart of the wicked is little worth. The lips of the righteous feed many: But fools die for want of wisdom. The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, And he addeth no sorrow with it.

Proverbs 10:19-22 NKJV (New King James Version)

In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; The heart of the wicked is worth little. The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of wisdom. The blessing of the LORD makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.

Proverbs 10:19-22 MSG (The Message)

The more talk, the less truth; the wise measure their words. The speech of a good person is worth waiting for; the blabber of the wicked is worthless. The talk of a good person is rich fare for many, but chatterboxes die of an empty heart. GOD GOD’s blessing makes life rich; nothing we do can improve on God.

Proverbs 10:19-22 NASB2020 (New American Standard Bible - NASB)

When there are many words, wrongdoing is unavoidable, But one who restrains his lips is wise. The tongue of the righteous is like choice silver, The heart of the wicked is worth little. The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of understanding. It is the blessing of the LORD that makes rich, And He adds no sorrow to it.

Proverbs 10:19-22 AMP (Amplified Bible)

When there are many words, transgression and offense are unavoidable, But he who controls his lips and keeps thoughtful silence is wise. The tongue of the righteous is like precious silver (greatly valued); The heart of the wicked is worth little. The lips of the righteous feed and guide many, But fools [who reject God and His wisdom] die for lack of understanding. The blessing of the LORD brings [true] riches, And He adds no sorrow to it [for it comes as a blessing from God].

Proverbs 10:19-22 NET (New English Translation)

When words abound, transgression is inevitable, but the one who restrains his words is wise. What the righteous say is like the best silver, but what the wicked think is of little value. The teaching of the righteous feeds many, but fools die for lack of wisdom. The blessing from the LORD makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow to it.
