Jeremiah 5:12-14 - Compare All Versions

Jeremiah 5:12-14 NIV (New International Version)

They have lied about the LORD; they said, “He will do nothing! No harm will come to us; we will never see sword or famine. The prophets are but wind and the word is not in them; so let what they say be done to them.” Therefore this is what the LORD God Almighty says: “Because the people have spoken these words, I will make my words in your mouth a fire and these people the wood it consumes.

Jeremiah 5:12-14 ESV (English Standard Version 2025)

They have spoken falsely of the LORD and have said, ‘He will do nothing; no disaster will come upon us, nor shall we see sword or famine. The prophets will become wind; the word is not in them. Thus shall it be done to them!’” LORD Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of hosts: “Because you have spoken this word, behold, I am making my words in your mouth a fire, and this people wood, and the fire shall consume them.

Jeremiah 5:12-14 NLT (New Living Translation)

“They have lied about the LORD and said, ‘He won’t bother us! No disasters will come upon us. There will be no war or famine. God’s prophets are all windbags who don’t really speak for him. Let their predictions of disaster fall on themselves!’” Therefore, this is what the LORD God of Heaven’s Armies says

Jeremiah 5:12-14 CSB (Christian Standard Bible)

They have contradicted the  LORD and insisted, “It won’t happen.  , Harm won’t come to us; we won’t see sword or famine.” The prophets become only wind, for the LORD’s word is not in them. This will in fact happen to them. Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD of Armies says: Because you have spoken this word, I am going to make my words become fire in your mouth.  These people are the wood, and the fire will consume them.

Jeremiah 5:12-14 KJV (King James Version)

They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine: and the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them. Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

Jeremiah 5:12-14 NKJV (New King James Version)

They have lied about the LORD, And said, “It is not He. Neither will evil come upon us, Nor shall we see sword or famine. And the prophets become wind, For the word is not in them. Thus shall it be done to them.” Therefore thus says the LORD God of hosts: “Because you speak this word, Behold, I will make My words in your mouth fire, And this people wood, And it shall devour them.

Jeremiah 5:12-14 MSG (The Message)

“They’ve spread lies about GOD. They’ve said, ‘There’s nothing to him. Nothing bad will happen to us, neither famine nor war will come our way. The prophets are all windbags. They speak nothing but nonsense.’” Therefore, this is what GOD said to me, GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies

Jeremiah 5:12-14 NASB2020 (New American Standard Bible - NASB)

They have lied about the LORD And said, “Not He; Misfortune will not come upon us, Nor will we see sword or famine. “The prophets are as wind, And the word is not in them. So it will be done to them!” ¶Therefore, this is what the LORD, the God of armies says: “Because you have spoken this word, Behold, I am making My words fire in your mouth, And this people wood, and it will consume them.

Jeremiah 5:12-14 AMP (Amplified Bible)

They have lied about and denied the LORD By saying, “It is not He [who speaks through His prophets]; Misfortune and evil shall not come on us, Nor will we see war or famine. “The prophets are like the wind [their prophecy will not come to pass], And the word [of God] is not in them. In this manner it will be done to them [as they prophesied, not to us].” ¶Therefore, thus says the LORD God of hosts, “Because you [people] have spoken this word, Behold, I am making My words a fire in your mouth [Jeremiah] And this people wood, and My words will consume them.

Jeremiah 5:12-14 NET (New English Translation)

“These people have denied what the LORD says. They have said, ‘That is not so! No harm will come to us. We will not experience war and famine. The prophets will prove to be full of wind. The LORD has not spoken through them. So, let what they say happen to them.’” Because of that, the LORD, the God who rules over all, said to me, “Because these people have spoken like this, I will make the words that I put in your mouth like fire. And I will make this people like wood which the fiery judgments you speak will burn up.”
