Jeremiah 2:36-37 - Compare All Versions

Jeremiah 2:36-37 NIV (New International Version)

Why do you go about so much, changing your ways? You will be disappointed by Egypt as you were by Assyria. You will also leave that place with your hands on your head, for the LORD has rejected those you trust; you will not be helped by them.

Jeremiah 2:36-37 ESV (English Standard Version 2025)

How much you go about, changing your way! You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria. From it too you will come away with your hands on your head, for the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust, and you will not prosper by them.

Jeremiah 2:36-37 NLT (New Living Translation)

First here, then there— you flit from one ally to another asking for help. But your new friends in Egypt will let you down, just as Assyria did before. In despair, you will be led into exile with your hands on your heads, for the LORD has rejected the nations you trust. They will not help you at all.

Jeremiah 2:36-37 CSB (Christian Standard Bible)

How unstable you are,  constantly changing your ways! You will be put to shame by Egypt  just as you were put to shame by Assyria. Moreover, you will be led out from here with your hands on your head  since the LORD has rejected those you trust;  you will not succeed even with their help.

Jeremiah 2:36-37 KJV (King James Version)

Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria. Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

Jeremiah 2:36-37 NKJV (New King James Version)

Why do you gad about so much to change your way? Also you shall be ashamed of Egypt as you were ashamed of Assyria. Indeed you will go forth from him With your hands on your head; For the LORD has rejected your trusted allies, And you will not prosper by them.

Jeremiah 2:36-37 MSG (The Message)

“You think it’s just a small thing, don’t you, to try out another sin-project when the first one fails? But Egypt will leave you in the lurch the same way that Assyria did. You’re going to walk away from there wringing your hands. I, GOD, have blacklisted those you trusted. You’ll get not a lick of help from them.”

Jeremiah 2:36-37 NASB2020 (New American Standard Bible - NASB)

“Why do you go around so much Changing your way? Also, you will be put to shame by Egypt, Just as you were put to shame by Assyria. “From this place as well you will go out With your hands on your head; For the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust, And you will not prosper with them.”

Jeremiah 2:36-37 AMP (Amplified Bible)

“Why do you go around and wander so much Changing your way? Also, you will be shamed by Egypt As you were shamed by Assyria. “From Egypt also you will come away [as captives] With your hands on your head; For the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust (confide), And you will not be successful with them.”

Jeremiah 2:36-37 NET (New English Translation)

Why do you constantly go about changing your political allegiances? You will get no help from Egypt just as you got no help from Assyria. Moreover, you will come away from Egypt with your hands covering your faces in sorrow and shame because the LORD will not allow your reliance on them to be successful and you will not gain any help from them.
