Hosea 13:1-11

Hosea 13:1-12 The Message (MSG)

God once let loose against Ephraim a terrifying sentence against Israel: Caught and convicted in the lewd sex-worship of Baal—they died! And now they’re back in the sin business again, manufacturing god-images they can use, Religion customized to taste. Professionals see to it: Anything you want in a god you can get. Can you believe it? They sacrifice live babies to these dead gods— kill living babies and kiss golden calves! And now there’s nothing left to these people: hollow men, desiccated women, Like scraps of paper blown down the street, like smoke in a gusty wind. “I’m still your GOD, the God who saved you out of Egypt. I’m the only real God you’ve ever known. I’m the one and only God who delivers. I took care of you during the wilderness hard times, those years when you had nothing. I took care of you, took care of all your needs, gave you everything you needed. You were spoiled. You thought you didn’t need me. You forgot me. “I’ll charge them like a lion, like a leopard stalking in the brush. I’ll jump them like a sow grizzly robbed of her cubs. I’ll rip out their guts. Coyotes will make a meal of them. Crows will clean their bones. I’m going to destroy you, Israel. Who is going to stop me? Where is your trusty king you thought would save you? Where are all the local leaders you wanted so badly? All these rulers you insisted on having, demanding, ‘Give me a king! Give me leaders!’? Well, long ago I gave you a king, but I wasn’t happy about it. Now, fed up, I’ve gotten rid of him. I have a detailed record of your infidelities— Ephraim’s sin documented and stored in a safe-deposit box.

Hosea 13:1-11 Amplified Bible (AMP)

When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling and terror. He exalted himself [above the other tribes] in Israel; But through [the worship of] Baal he became guilty and died [spiritually, and then came ruin, sealing Israel’s doom as a nation]. And now they sin more and more, And make for themselves molten images, Idols skillfully made from their silver [as it pleased them], All of them the work of the craftsmen. They say of these [very works of their hands], “Let those who sacrifice kiss and show respect to the calves [as if they were living gods]!” Therefore they will be [swiftly dissipated] like the morning cloud Or like dew which soon disappears, Like chaff which swirls with the whirlwind from the threshing floor, And like smoke from the chimney or through the window [worthless and without substance—they will vanish]. ¶Yet I have been the LORD your God Since [the time you became a nation in] the land of Egypt; And you were not to know any god except Me, For there is no savior besides Me. I knew and regarded you and cared for you in the wilderness, In the land of drought. When they had their pasture, they became satisfied, And being satisfied, their heart became proud (self-centered); Therefore they forgot Me. So I will be like a lion to them; Like a leopard I will watch and lie in wait [ready to attack] by the road [to Assyria]. I will encounter them like a bear robbed of her cubs, And I will tear open their chests; There I will also devour them like a lioness, As a wild beast would tear them. ¶It is your destruction, O Israel, Because you are against Me, [and have rebelled] against your help. Where now is your king That he may save you [when you are attacked] in all your cities? And your judges of whom you asked, “Give me a king and princes”? I gave you a king in My anger, And I took him away in My wrath [as punishment].

Hosea 13:1-11 The Passion Translation (TPT)

When Ephraim used to speak, his words commanded great respect. He once had great authority in Israel, but he became guilty of Baal worship and signed his own death warrant. And now they sin more and more by making silver idols for themselves, cleverly crafted idols of their own invention— each skillfully made by human hands. “Sacrifice to them,” they say. Why would men kiss idols of calves? Therefore, the entire tribe of Ephraim will vanish like the morning mist, like the dew that quickly disappears, like the chaff blown by the wind from the threshing floor, like smoke rising from a chimney. YAHWEH “I, YAHWEH, have been your true God ever since your days in Egypt. You must know no other god but me. There is no other god who can save you. I tenderly cared for you in the desert, in the land of dreadful drought. When I pastured you, you were full, but when you were satisfied, your hearts grew proud, and you completely forgot about me. So now I will be like a male lion to you, like a leopard lurking beside the path. I will attack you like a charging bear robbed of her cubs, and will rip open your chest. Like a lioness, I will devour you on the spot; like a wild beast I will tear you to shreds! Israel, you have destroyed yourself, because you are against me, your only help.” “Where is your king now, who could save you in all your cities? Where are your rulers, of whom you said, ‘Give us a king and leaders’? In my anger, I gave you kings, and in my wrath, I have taken them away.
