Habakkuk 2:12-20

Habakkuk 2:12-20 New Century Version (NCV)

“How terrible it will be for the nation that kills people to build a city, that wrongs others to start a town. The LORD All-Powerful will send fire to destroy what those people have built; all the nations’ work will be for nothing. Then, just as water covers the sea, people everywhere will know the LORD’s glory. “How terrible for the nation that makes its neighbors drink, pouring from the jug of wine until they are drunk so that it can look at their naked bodies. You Babylonians will be filled with disgrace, not respect. It’s your turn to drink and fall to the ground like a drunk person. The cup of anger from the LORD’s right hand is coming around to you. You will receive disgrace, not respect. You hurt many people in Lebanon, but now you will be hurt. You killed many animals there, and now you must be afraid because of what you did to that land, those cities, and the people who lived in them. “An idol does no good, because a human made it; it is only a statue that teaches lies. The one who made it expects his own work to help him, but he makes idols that can’t even speak! How terrible it will be for the one who says to a wooden statue, ‘Come to life!’ How terrible it will be for the one who says to a silent stone, ‘Get up!’ It cannot tell you what to do. It is only a statue covered with gold and silver; there is no life in it. The LORD is in his Holy Temple; all the earth should be silent in his presence.”

Habakkuk 2:12-20 Amplified Bible (AMP)

¶“Woe (judgment is coming) to him who builds a city with bloodshed And establishes a town by violence! “Is it not indeed from the LORD of hosts That peoples labor [only] for the fire [that will destroy their work], And nations grow weary for nothing [that is, things which have no lasting value]? “But [the time is coming when] the earth shall be filled With the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, As the waters cover the sea. [Is 11:9] ¶“Woe (judgment is coming) to you who make your neighbors drink, Who mix in your venom to make them drunk So that you may look at their nakedness! “You will be filled with disgrace instead of honor. Now drink and expose your own nakedness! The cup [of wrath] in the LORD’S right hand will come around to you [O destroyer], And utter disgrace will be on your own glory. [Rev 16:19] “For the violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you; The destruction of the animals will terrify you On account of human bloodshed and the violence done to the land, To the city and all its inhabitants. ¶“What profit is the carved image when its maker has formed it? It is only a cast image, and a teacher of lies. For its maker trusts in his own creation [as his god] When he makes speechless idols. “Woe (judgment is coming) to him who says to the wooden image, ‘Awake!’ And to the speechless stone, ‘Arise!’ And that is your teacher? Look, it is overlaid with gold and silver, And there is no breath at all inside it. “But the LORD is in His holy temple. Let all the earth hush and be silent before Him.” [Zeph 1:7; Zech 2:13]

Habakkuk 2:12-20 The Passion Translation (TPT)

“You are doomed, you who build a city with bloodshed and establish it upon evil! I, YAHWEH, Commander of Angel Armies, have decreed: The efforts of the nations are nothing but fuel for the fire, for all they have built will go up in smoke. Yet the entire earth is being filled with the revelation of the glory of YAHWEH, just as waters fill the sea. “You are doomed, you who delight to mix drinks for neighbors, pouring wine from pitchers until they are dead drunk just so that you can gaze on their naked bodies! Now you will be drunk with shame instead of honor. Now it is your turn! Drink your fill and let your nakedness be exposed. The cup of punishment that YAHWEH holds in his right hand is now coming around to you. Your former glory will be covered with your vomit of disgrace. Your violent acts against Lebanon will violently overwhelm you. Since you killed its animals, animals will terrify you. For you have killed many people and acted violently against lands and cities and everyone in them. “You are doomed, you who say to a piece of dead wood, ‘Come to life!’ Or to lifeless stone, ‘Get up!’ Can something dead give revelation? Even though it is covered with gold and silver, there is no breath in it. Of what use is an idol carved by a craftsman? Or a metal image that gives misleading oracles? For the one who makes it trusts the work of human hands; a god that cannot even talk.” YAHWEH is in his holy temple; let everyone on earth be silent before him.
