Ecclesiastes 7:5-7
Ecclesiastes 7:5-7 The Message (MSG)
You’ll get more from the rebuke of a sage Than from the song and dance of fools. The giggles of fools are like the crackling of twigs Under the cooking pot. And like smoke. Brutality stupefies even the wise And destroys the strongest heart.
Ecclesiastes 7:5-7 King James Version (KJV)
It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools. For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity. Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
Ecclesiastes 7:5-7 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
It is better to listen to the rebuke of a wise man Than for one to listen to the song of fools. For as the crackling of thorn bushes under a pot, So is the laughter of the fool; And this too is futility. For oppression makes a wise man mad, And a bribe corrupts the heart.
Ecclesiastes 7:5-7 New Century Version (NCV)
It is better to be criticized by a wise person than to be praised by a fool. The laughter of fools is like the crackling of thorns in a cooking fire. Both are useless. Even wise people are fools if they let money change their thinking.
Ecclesiastes 7:5-7 American Standard Version (ASV)
It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools. For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity. Surely extortion maketh the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroyeth the understanding.
Ecclesiastes 7:5-7 New International Version (NIV)
It is better to heed the rebuke of a wise person than to listen to the song of fools. Like the crackling of thorns under the pot, so is the laughter of fools. This too is meaningless. Extortion turns a wise person into a fool, and a bribe corrupts the heart.
Ecclesiastes 7:5-7 New King James Version (NKJV)
It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise Than for a man to hear the song of fools. For like the crackling of thorns under a pot, So is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity. Surely oppression destroys a wise man’s reason, And a bribe debases the heart.
Ecclesiastes 7:5-7 Amplified Bible (AMP)
It is better to listen to the rebuke of the wise man and pursue wisdom Than for one to listen to the song of fools and pursue stupidity. For like the crackling of [burning] thorn bushes under a pot, So is the laughter of the fool; And this too is vanity (futility). For oppression makes a wise man foolish, And a bribe corrupts the [good judgment of the] heart.
Ecclesiastes 7:5-7 New Living Translation (NLT)
Better to be criticized by a wise person than to be praised by a fool. A fool’s laughter is quickly gone, like thorns crackling in a fire. This also is meaningless. Extortion turns wise people into fools, and bribes corrupt the heart.
Ecclesiastes 7:5-7 English Standard Version Revision 2016 (ESV)
It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools. For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fools; this also is vanity. Surely oppression drives the wise into madness, and a bribe corrupts the heart.
