Amos 7:9-17

Amos 7:9-17 New Century Version (NCV)

“The places where Isaac’s descendants worship will be destroyed, Israel’s holy places will be turned into ruins, and I will attack King Jeroboam’s family with the sword.” Amaziah, a priest at Bethel, sent this message to Jeroboam king of Israel: “Amos is making evil plans against you with the people of Israel. He has been speaking so much that this land can’t hold all his words. This is what Amos has said: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and the people of Israel will be taken as captives out of their own country.’ ” Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Seer, go back right now to Judah. Do your prophesying and earn your living there, but don’t prophesy anymore here at Bethel. This is the king’s holy place, and it is the nation’s temple.” Then Amos answered Amaziah, “I do not make my living as a prophet, nor am I a member of a group of prophets. I make my living as a shepherd, and I take care of sycamore trees. But the LORD took me away from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ So listen to the LORD’s word. You tell me, ‘Don’t prophesy against Israel, and stop prophesying against the descendants of Isaac.’ “Because you have said this, the LORD says: ‘Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, and your sons and daughters will be killed with swords. Other people will measure your land and divide it among themselves, and you will die in a foreign country. The people of Israel will definitely be taken from their own land as captives.’ ”

Amos 7:9-17 Amplified Bible (AMP)

“And the [idolatrous] high places of Isaac (Israel) will be devastated and deserted, And the sanctuaries of Israel will be in ruins. Then I shall rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword [and destroy the monarchy].” Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel [site of the golden calf shrine], sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words. [1 Kin 12:31, 32] For in this way Amos has said, ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’ ” Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Go, you seer, run for your life [from Israel] to the land of Judah [your own country] and eat bread and live as a prophet there! But do not prophesy any longer at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary and a royal residence.” [Luke 10:10-12] Then Amos replied to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet [by profession], nor am I a prophet’s son; I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs. But the LORD took me as I followed the flock and the LORD said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’ Now therefore, listen to the word of the LORD: You say, ‘You shall not prophesy against Israel nor shall you speak against the house of Isaac.’ Therefore, thus says the LORD, ‘Your wife shall become a prostitute in the city [when the Assyrians capture Samaria] and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided by a measuring line; you yourself shall die in an unclean and defiled [pagan] land, and Israel shall certainly go from its land into exile.’ ”

Amos 7:9-17 The Passion Translation (TPT)

I will destroy the high places where Isaac’s descendants worship, and I will ruin the holy places of Israel. With my sword in hand, I will attack the dynasty of Jeroboam.” Then Amaziah the chief priest of Bethel sent the following message to Jeroboam king of Israel: “Amos has conspired against you in the very heart of Israel. We cannot stand his speeches! For Amos says, ‘Jeroboam is going to die by the sword, and Israel will go into captivity far from its native land.’ ” Amaziah said to Amos, “Go away, you seer. Why don’t you escape to Judah while there is time? You can always prophesy there and make your living. But don’t stay around here and prophesy at Bethel anymore. This is the national temple, the place where the king worships.” Amos replied, “I am not a prophet, nor am I one of the sons of the prophets. I am merely a rancher, and I cultivate fig trees. But one day, YAHWEH called me as I was managing my flocks and said to me, ‘Go and prophesy to my people Israel.’ “So now, Amaziah, listen to what YAHWEH says. You say: ‘Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not prophesy doom on Isaac’s descendants!’ Very well. This is what YAHWEH says: ‘Your wife will become a prostitute in the streets, and your sons and daughters will fall in battle. Your land will be measured, divided up, and given to others. And you yourself will die in a pagan land, and Israel will go into captivity far from its own land!’ ”
