1 Corinthians 11:8-10
1 Corinthians 11:8-10 New King James Version (NKJV)
For man is not from woman, but woman from man. Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
1 Corinthians 11:3-12 The Message (MSG)
In a marriage relationship, there is authority from Christ to husband, and from husband to wife. The authority of Christ is the authority of God. Any man who speaks with God or about God in a way that shows a lack of respect for the authority of Christ, dishonors Christ. In the same way, a wife who speaks with God in a way that shows a lack of respect for the authority of her husband, dishonors her husband. Worse, she dishonors herself—an ugly sight, like a woman with her head shaved. This is basically the origin of these customs we have of women wearing head coverings in worship, while men take their hats off. By these symbolic acts, men and women, who far too often butt heads with each other, submit their “heads” to the Head: God. Don’t, by the way, read too much into the differences here between men and women. Neither man nor woman can go it alone or claim priority. Man was created first, as a beautiful shining reflection of God—that is true. But the head on a woman’s body clearly outshines in beauty the head of her “head,” her husband. The first woman came from man, true—but ever since then, every man comes from a woman! And since virtually everything comes from God anyway, let’s quit going through these “who’s first” routines.
1 Corinthians 11:8-10 King James Version (KJV)
For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
1 Corinthians 11:8-10 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake. Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
1 Corinthians 11:8-10 New Century Version (NCV)
Man did not come from woman, but woman came from man. And man was not made for woman, but woman was made for man. So that is why a woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
1 Corinthians 11:8-10 American Standard Version (ASV)
For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man: for neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man: for this cause ought the woman to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.
1 Corinthians 11:8-10 New International Version (NIV)
For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels.
1 Corinthians 11:8-10 Amplified Bible (AMP)
For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; [Gen 2:21-23] for indeed man was not created for the sake of woman, but woman for the sake of man. [Gen 2:18] Therefore the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, for the sake of the angels [so as not to offend them].
1 Corinthians 11:8-10 New Living Translation (NLT)
For the first man didn’t come from woman, but the first woman came from man. And man was not made for woman, but woman was made for man. For this reason, and because the angels are watching, a woman should wear a covering on her head to show she is under authority.
1 Corinthians 11:8-10 The Passion Translation (TPT)
for man was not created from woman but woman from man. By the same token, the man was not created because the woman needed him; the woman was created because the man needed her. For this reason she should have authority over the head because of the angels.
