John 14

The Road
1-4“Don’t let this rattle you. You trust God, don’t you? Trust me. There is plenty of room for you in my Father’s home. If that weren’t so, would I have told you that I’m on my way to get a room ready for you? And if I’m on my way to get your room ready, I’ll come back and get you so you can live where I live. And you already know the road I’m taking.”
5Thomas said, “Master, we have no idea where you’re going. How do you expect us to know the road?”
6-7Jesus said, “I am the Road, also the Truth, also the Life. No one gets to the Father apart from me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him. You’ve even seen him!”
8Philip said, “Master, show us the Father; then we’ll be content.”
9-10“You’ve been with me all this time, Philip, and you still don’t understand? To see me is to see the Father. So how can you ask, ‘Where is the Father?’ Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you aren’t mere words. I don’t just make them up on my own. The Father who resides in me crafts each word into a divine act.
11-14“Believe me: I am in my Father and my Father is in me. If you can’t believe that, believe what you see—these works. The person who trusts me will not only do what I’m doing but even greater things, because I, on my way to the Father, am giving you the same work to do that I’ve been doing. You can count on it. From now on, whatever you request along the lines of who I am and what I am doing, I’ll do it. That’s how the Father will be seen for who he is in the Son. I mean it. Whatever you request in this way, I’ll do.
The Spirit of Truth
15-17“If you love me, show it by doing what I’ve told you. I will talk to the Father, and he’ll provide you another Friend so that you will always have someone with you. This Friend is the Spirit of Truth. The godless world can’t take him in because it doesn’t have eyes to see him, doesn’t know what to look for. But you know him already because he has been staying with you, and will even be in you!
18-20“I will not leave you orphaned. I’m coming back. In just a little while the world will no longer see me, but you’re going to see me because I am alive and you’re about to come alive. At that moment you will know absolutely that I’m in my Father, and you’re in me, and I’m in you.
21“The person who knows my commandments and keeps them, that’s who loves me. And the person who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and make myself plain to him.”
22Judas (not Iscariot) said, “Master, why is it that you are about to make yourself plain to us but not to the world?”
23-24“Because a loveless world,” said Jesus, “is a sightless world. If anyone loves me, he will carefully keep my word and my Father will love him—we’ll move right into the neighborhood! Not loving me means not keeping my words. The message you are hearing isn’t mine. It’s the message of the Father who sent me.
25-27“I’m telling you these things while I’m still living with you. The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you. I’m leaving you well and whole. That’s my parting gift to you. Peace. I don’t leave you the way you’re used to being left—feeling abandoned, bereft. So don’t be upset. Don’t be distraught.
28“You’ve heard me tell you, ‘I’m going away, and I’m coming back.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I’m on my way to the Father because the Father is the goal and purpose of my life.
29-31“I’ve told you this ahead of time, before it happens, so that when it does happen, the confirmation will deepen your belief in me. I’ll not be talking with you much more like this because the chief of this godless world is about to attack. But don’t worry—he has nothing on me, no claim on me. But so the world might know how thoroughly I love the Father, I am carrying out my Father’s instructions right down to the last detail.
“Get up. Let’s go. It’s time to leave here.”

John 14

The Way, the Truth, and the Life
1“Let #(John 14:27; 16:22, 24)not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. #Matt. 25:34; John 13:33, 36; Heb. 11:16I go to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, #(Acts 1:11)I will come again and receive you to Myself; that #(John 12:26; 1 Thess. 4:17)where I am, there you may be also. 4And where I go you know, and the way you know.”
5#Matt. 10:3; John 11:16; 20:24–29; 21:2Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”
6Jesus said to him, “I am #(John 10:9; Rom. 5:2; Eph. 2:18; Heb. 9:8; 10:19, 20)the way, #(John 1:14, 17; 8:32; 18:37)the truth, and #(John 11:25)the life. #1 Tim. 2:5No one comes to the Father #(John 10:7–9; Acts 4:12)except through Me.
The Father Revealed
7#John 8:19“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”
8Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”
9Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? #John 12:45; Col. 1:15; Heb. 1:3He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Do you not believe that #John 10:38; 14:11, 20I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you #Deut. 18:18; John 5:19; 14:24I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, #John 5:36; 10:38or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.
The Answered Prayer
12#Matt. 21:21; Mark 16:17; Luke 10:17“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13#Matt. 7:7; (Mark 11:24); Luke 11:9; John 15:16; 16:23, 24; (James 1:5–7; 1 John 3:22)And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be #John 13:31glorified in the Son. 14If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
Jesus Promises Another Helper
15#1 John 5:3“If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16And I will pray the Father, and #(John 15:26; 20:22); Acts 2:4, 33; Rom. 8:15He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17#(John 15:26; 16:13; 1 John 4:6; 5:7)the Spirit of truth, #(1 Cor. 2:14)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you #(1 John 2:27)and will be in you. 18#(Matt. 28:20)I will not leave you orphans; #(John 14:3, 28)I will come to you.
Indwelling of the Father and the Son
19“A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but #John 16:16, 22you will see Me. #(Rom. 5:10; 1 Cor. 15:20; 2 Cor. 4:10)Because I live, you will live also. 20At that day you will know that #John 10:38; 14:11I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21#1 John 2:5He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
22#Luke 6:16; Acts 1:13Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”
23Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, #2 Cor. 6:16; Eph. 3:17; (1 John 2:24); Rev. 3:20; 21:3and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and #John 5:19the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.
The Gift of His Peace
25“These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26But #Luke 24:49the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will #John 15:26send in My name, #1 Cor. 2:13He will teach you all things, and bring to your #John 2:22; 12:16; 1 John 2:20remembrance all things that I said to you. 27#Luke 1:79; (John 16:33; 20:19; Phil. 4:7); Col. 3:15Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28You have heard Me #John 14:3, 18say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, #John 16:16‘I am going to the Father,’ for #(John 5:18; Phil. 2:6)My Father is greater than I.
29“And #John 13:19now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. 30I will no longer talk much with you, #(John 12:31)for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has #(John 8:46; 2 Cor. 5:21; Heb. 4:15; 1 Pet. 1:19; 2:22)nothing in Me. 31But that the world may know that I love the Father, and #Is. 50:5; John 10:18; Phil. 2:8as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.
