Psalms 80

A Prayer to Restore Israel
For the music director, according to The Lilies.
A testimony. Of Asaph. A psalm.#The Hebrew Bible counts the superscription as the first verse of the psalm; the English verse number is reduced by one
1Give ear, O shepherd of Israel,
who leads Joseph like a flock.
Shine forth, you who sits enthroned above the cherubim.
2Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh,
stir up your power
and come for our salvation.
3O God, restore us,
and cause your face to shine that we may be saved.
4O Yahweh God of hosts,
how long will you be angry#Literally “until when your anger smoke”
against the prayer of your people?
5You have fed them the bread of tears;
you have given them tears to drink in full measure.#The Hebrew “threefold” or “a third of a measure” is difficult
6You have made us an object of strife to our neighbors,
and our enemies mock among themselves.
7O God of hosts, restore us
and cause your face to shine that we may be saved.
8You uprooted a vine from Egypt;
you drove out the nations and planted it.
9You prepared a place before it,
and it took deep root#Literally “its root rooted” and filled the land.
10The mountains were covered with its shade,
and the mighty cedars with its boughs.
11It spread its branches to the sea
and its shoots to the river.
12Why have you broken down its walls,
so that all who pass on the road pluck fruit from it?
13Swine from the forests devour#Hebrew “devours” it
and creatures of the field feed on it.
14Please return, O God of hosts.
Observe from heaven and see,
and pay attention to this vine,
15eventhe stalk that your right hand planted,
and concerning the shoot#Hebrew “son” you strengthened for yourself.
16It is burned with fire, cut down.
They perish at the rebuke of your face.
17Let your hand be on the man of your right hand,
on the son of humankind whom you made strong for yourself.
18Then we will not turn back from you.
Restore us to life, and we will proclaim your name.
19O Yahweh God of hosts, restore us;
cause your face to shine that we may be saved.

Psalm 80#In Hebrew texts 80:1-19 is numbered 80:2-20.
For the director of music. To the tune of “The Lilies of the Covenant.” Of Asaph. A psalm.
1Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead Joseph like a flock.
You who sit enthroned between the cherubim,
shine forth 2before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.
Awaken your might;
come and save us.
3Restore us, O God;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.
4How long, Lord God Almighty,
will your anger smolder
against the prayers of your people?
5You have fed them with the bread of tears;
you have made them drink tears by the bowlful.
6You have made us an object of derision#80:6 Probable reading of the original Hebrew text; Masoretic Text contention to our neighbors,
and our enemies mock us.
7Restore us, God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.
8You transplanted a vine from Egypt;
you drove out the nations and planted it.
9You cleared the ground for it,
and it took root and filled the land.
10The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches.
11Its branches reached as far as the Sea,#80:11 Probably the Mediterranean
its shoots as far as the River.#80:11 That is, the Euphrates
12Why have you broken down its walls
so that all who pass by pick its grapes?
13Boars from the forest ravage it,
and insects from the fields feed on it.
14Return to us, God Almighty!
Look down from heaven and see!
Watch over this vine,
15the root your right hand has planted,
the son#80:15 Or branch you have raised up for yourself.
16Your vine is cut down, it is burned with fire;
at your rebuke your people perish.
17Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand,
the son of man you have raised up for yourself.
18Then we will not turn away from you;
revive us, and we will call on your name.
19Restore us, Lord God Almighty;
make your face shine on us,
that we may be saved.
