Psalms 6
6
An Appeal for Forgiveness and Deliverance
For the music director; with stringed instruments, on the Sheminith.#Hebrew “upon the eighth”; meaning uncertain
A psalm of David.#The Hebrew Bible counts the superscription as the first verse of the psalm; the English verse number is reduced by one
1O Yahweh, do not rebuke me in your anger,
and do not discipline me in your wrath.
2Be gracious to me, O Yahweh, because I am feeble.
Heal me, O Yahweh, for my bones are terrified.
3My soul is also very terrified.
But you, O Yahweh, how long?
4Turn, O Yahweh; deliver my life.#Or “my soul”; same word as in v. 3
Save me for the sake of your steadfast love.#Or “loyal love”
5For there is no remembrance of you in death.
In Sheol, who will give thanks to you?
6I am weary with my groaning;
I flood#Literally “I make my bed float” my bed every night.
With my tears I drench#Literally “I cause to melt” my couch.
7My eye wastes away because of vexation;
it grows old because of all my oppressors.
8Depart from me, all workers of evil,
for Yahweh has heard the sound of my weeping.
9Yahweh has heard my plea;
Yahweh has accepted my prayer.
10All my enemies shall be ashamed and shall be very terrified.
They shall turn back; they shall suddenly be ashamed.

Psalms 6
6
For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments, upon the eight-stringed lyre. A Psalm by David.
1Yahweh, don’t rebuke me in your anger,
neither discipline me in your wrath.
2Have mercy on me, Yahweh, for I am faint.
Yahweh, heal me, for my bones are troubled.
3My soul is also in great anguish.
But you, Yahweh—how long?
4Return, Yahweh. Deliver my soul,
and save me for your loving kindness’ sake.
5For in death there is no memory of you.
In Sheol,#6:5 Sheol is the place of the dead. who shall give you thanks?
6I am weary with my groaning.
Every night I flood my bed.
I drench my couch with my tears.
7My eye wastes away because of grief.
It grows old because of all my adversaries.
8Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity,
for Yahweh has heard the voice of my weeping.
9Yahweh has heard my supplication.
Yahweh accepts my prayer.
10May all my enemies be ashamed and dismayed.
They shall turn back, they shall be disgraced suddenly.
