Safety in Yahweh
For the music director; with stringed instruments. A psalm of David.#The Hebrew Bible counts the superscription as the first verse of the psalm; the English verse number is reduced by one
1When I call, answer me, O God of my righteousness.#Or “vindication”
In trouble deliver me.#Literally “make wide for me”
Be gracious to me and hear my prayer.
2O sons of man, how long will my honor#Or “glory” be a disgrace?
How long will you love vanity?
How long will you seek lies?#Or “falsehood” Selah
3But know that Yahweh has set apart#Or “treated specially” for himself the faithful one.#Or “pious, godly one”
Yahweh hears when I call to him.
4Be disturbed but do not sin.
Commune in your heart#That is, “think it over” on your bed and be silent. Selah
5Offer correct sacrifices,#Or “right sacrifices”
and trust in#Literally “trust to” Yahweh.
6Many are saying, “Who will show us something good?”
Lift up over#Or “upon” us the light of your face, O Yahweh.
7You have put gladness in my heart
more than when#Literally “the time of” their grain and their wine abound.
8In peace I will lie down and sleep at once,#Literally “together”
for you alone, O Yahweh, make me dwell safely.

Psalm 4#In Hebrew texts 4:1-8 is numbered 4:2-9.
For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David.
1Answer me when I call to you,
my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress;
have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
2How long will you people turn my glory into shame?
How long will you love delusions and seek false gods#4:2 Or seek lies?#4:2 The Hebrew has Selah (a word of uncertain meaning) here and at the end of verse 4.
3Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.
4Tremble and#4:4 Or In your anger (see Septuagint) do not sin;
when you are on your beds,
search your hearts and be silent.
5Offer the sacrifices of the righteous
and trust in the Lord.
6Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?”
Let the light of your face shine on us.
7Fill my heart with joy
when their grain and new wine abound.
8In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, Lord,
make me dwell in safety.
