Psalms 38

A Prayer of Repentance
A psalm of David. To bring to remembrance.#The Hebrew Bible counts the superscription as the first verse of the psalm; the English verse number is reduced by one
1O Yahweh, do not rebuke me in your anger
or chastise me in your wrath.
2For your arrows have sunk into me,
and your hand has pressed down on me.
3There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation.
There is no health in my bones because of my sin.
4For my iniquities have passed over my head;
like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
5My wounds start to stink; they rot
because of my foolishness.
6I am bowed down; I am bent over greatly.
All the day I go about mourning.
7For my loins are full of burning,
and there is no soundness in my flesh.
8I am faint and crushed greatly;
I groan because of the roaring of my heart.
9O Lord, all my longing is before you,
and my sighing is not hidden from you.
10My heart throbs violently, my strength leaves me;
and the light of my eyes, that also is not with me.
11My friends and companions stand aloof from my affliction,
and my relatives stand afar off.
12Those who seek my life lay snares as well,
and those intent on my harm speak threats.
They also plot deceit all day.
13But as for me, like the deaf I cannot hear,
and I am like the mute who cannot open his mouth.
14And so I am like a man who hears not,
and in whose mouth there are no retorts.
15Rather for you I wait, O Yahweh.
You will answer, O Lord my God.
16For I said, “Help, lest they rejoice over me,
lest they boast against me when my foot slips.”
17For I am ready to stumble,
and my pain is before me continually.
18For my iniquity I confess;
I am anxious because of my sin.
19And my enemies without cause#Or “vigorous” are numerous,
and those who hate me wrongfully#Or “those who hate me with falsehood” are many.
20And those who repay evil in return for good
accuse me in return for my pursuing good.
21Do not forsake me, O Yahweh.
O my God, do not be far from me.
22Hurry to help me,
O Lord, my salvation.

Psalms 38

A Psalm of David. To bring remembrance.
1O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your wrath,
nor chasten me in Your hot displeasure.
2#Ps 63:1; 84:2 For Your arrows pierce me,
and Your hand presses down on me.
3#Ps 79:10; 80:5 There is no soundness in my flesh because of Your indignation,
nor is there health in my bones because of my sin.
4#Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8 For my iniquities have passed over my head;
as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
5#Ps 42:11; 43:5 My wounds grow foul and fester
because of my foolishness.
6#2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8–9 I am bent, I am bowed down greatly;
I go mourning all the day long.
7#Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3 For my sides are filled with burning,
and there is no soundness in my flesh.
8#Job 35:10; Ps 63:6 I am numb and completely crushed;
I have roared because of the groaning of my heart.
9#Ps 38:6; 18:2 Lord, all my desire is before You,
and my sighing is not hidden from You.
10#Ps 42:3; Joel 2:17 My heart throbs, my strength fails me;
as for the light of my eyes, it also is gone from me.
11#Ps 42:5; 43:5 My friends and my companions stand back because of my affliction,
and those close to me stand at a distance.
12The people who seek my life strike at me;
those who seek my harm speak destruction,
and plan treacheries all the day long.
13But I, like a deaf man, did not hear;
and like a dumb man, did not open my mouth.
14Thus I was as a man who does not hear,
and in whose mouth are no reproofs.
15For in You, O Lord, do I hope;
You will answer, O Lord my God.
16For I said, “Lest otherwise they should rejoice over me.
When my foot slips, they magnify themselves against me.”
17For I am ready to stumble,
and my pain is continually before me.
18For I will declare my iniquity;
I am anxious because of my sin.
19But my enemies are lively, and they are strong;
and those who wrongfully hate me are many.
20Those also who repay evil for good are my adversaries,
because I pursue good.
21Do not abandon me, O Lord;
O my God, do not be far from me.
22Make haste to help me,
O Lord, my salvation.
