Human Wickedness and God’s Love
For the music director. Of David, the servant of Yahweh.#The Hebrew Bible counts the superscription as the first verse of the psalm; the English verse number is reduced by one
1An oracle: the wicked has rebellion
in the midst of his#Reading with a few Hebrew manuscripts and some versions; MT reads “my” heart.
There is no fear of God before his eyes.
2For he flatters himself in his eyes,
hating to detect his iniquity.#Or “when finding his iniquity and when hating”
3The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit.
He has ceased to have insight and to do good.
4He plans sin on his bed.
He puts himself on a way that is not good.
He does not reject evil.
5O Yahweh, your loyal love extends into the heavens,
your faithfulness unto the clouds.
6Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,#Literally “like the mountains of God”
your judgments like the great deep.
You save man and beast, O Yahweh.
7How precious is your loyal love, O God,
and the children of humankind
take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8They are refreshed with the fullness#Literally “fatness” of your house,#Or “temple”
and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
9For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
10Prolong your loyal love to those who know you,
and your righteousness to the upright of heart.
11Do not let a foot of pride come against me,
nor let a wicked hand make me to wander homeless.
12There doers of evil have fallen;
they are thrust down and not able to rise.

For the Music Director. A Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord.
1An oracle within my heart
about the transgression of the wicked:
There is no fear of God
before their eyes.
2#Ps 63:1; 84:2 For they flatter themselves in their own eyes,
that their iniquity cannot be found out and hated.
3#Ps 79:10; 80:5 The words of their mouth are wickedness and deceit;
they have ceased to be wise and to do good.
4#Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8 They devise mischief on their bed;
they set themselves on a path that is not good;
they do not reject evil.
5#Ps 42:11; 43:5 Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens,
and Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
6#2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8–9 Your righteousness is like the great mountains,
Your judgments like the great deep;
O Lord, You preserve man and beast.
7#Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3 How excellent is Your lovingkindness, O God!
Therefore mankind
seeks refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
8#Job 35:10; Ps 63:6 They will drink their fill from the abundance of Your house,
and You will cause them to drink from the river of Your pleasures.
9#Ps 38:6; 18:2 For with You is the fountain of life;
in Your light we see light.
10#Ps 42:3; Joel 2:17 Oh, continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You,
and Your righteousness to the upright in heart.
11#Ps 42:5; 43:5 Do not let the foot of the arrogant come against me,
and do not let the hand of the wicked cause me to wander.
12There the workers of iniquity have fallen;
they are cast down and not able to rise.
