Thanksgiving to Yahweh for His of Deliverance
1Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good,
for his loyal love is forever.
2Let the redeemed of Yahweh declare#Hebrew “say” it,
those whom he has redeemed from the hand of the enemy
3and gathered from the lands,
from east and from west, from north and from south.#Hebrew “sea” (yam), which usually means “west” in a listing of directions. The word “south” is expected (Hebrew yamin). Either the MT was corrupted early (along with Isa 49:12; the LXX reads “sea” in both) or it looks to the bodies of waters to the south (see also the Targum)
4They wandered in the wilderness, in a desert.
They could find no way#The MT reads “way” with the previous line. to a city to inhabit.
5Hungry and thirsty,
their soul grew faint within them.
6Then they cried out to Yahweh in their trouble.
He delivered them from their distresses
7and led them by a straight way
to get to a city to inhabit.
8Let them give thanks to Yahweh for his loyal love,
and his wonderful deeds for the children of humankind,
9for he satisfies the longing soul,#Thirst is perhaps in view
and the hungry soul he fills with good.
10Those who sat in darkness and gloom,
prisoners of misery and iron—
11because they rebelled against the words of God
and spurned the counsel of the Most High,
12he therefore humbled their heart with trouble.
They stumbled and there was no helper.
13Then they called to Yahweh for help in their trouble;
he saved them from their distresses.
14He brought them out of darkness and gloom,
and tore off their bonds.
15Let them give thanks to Yahweh for his loyal love
and his wonderful deeds for the children of humankind,
16for he shatters the doors of bronze,
and cuts through the bars of iron.
17Fools, because of their rebellious way
and their iniquities, were afflicted.
18Their soul abhorred all food,
and they approached the gates of death.
19Then they called to Yahweh for help in their trouble.
He saved them from their distresses.
20He sent his word and healed them,
and he delivered them from their pits.#This word is only found elsewhere in Lam 4:20 with the sense of “traps”
21Let them give thanks to Yahweh for his loyal love,
and his wonderful deeds for the children of humankind,
22and let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
and tell of his works with rejoicing.
23Those who went down to the sea into ships,
doing business on the high seas,#Literally “many waters”
24they saw the works of Yahweh,
and his wonderful deeds in the deep.
25For he spoke and raised up a stormy wind,
and it whipped up its waves.
26They rose to the heavens; they plunged to the depths.
Their soul melted in their calamity.
27They reeled and staggered like a drunkard,
and they were at their wits’ end.#Literally “all their wisdom was swallowed up”
28Then they cried out to Yahweh in their trouble,
and he brought them out of their distresses.
29He made the storm be still
and their waves became calm.
30Then they were glad because they grew silent,
so he guided them to their desired harbor.
31Let them give thanks to Yahweh for his loyal love
and his wonderful deeds for the children of humankind,
32and let them exalt him in the congregation of the people,
and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
33He turns rivers into a wilderness
and springs of water into thirsty ground,
34a fruitful land into a salty place,
because of the evil of its inhabitants.
35He turns a wilderness into a pool of water
and a dry land into springs of water.
36And he settles the hungry there,
so that they may establish a city to inhabit,
37and sow fields and plant vineyards,
that they may yield fruit at harvest.#Hebrew “and make a fruit of produce”
38And he blesses them and they multiply greatly,
and he does not let their cattle become few.
39When they become few and they are bent down
from the oppression of calamity and grief,
40he pours contempt on princes
and causes them to wander in a trackless waste.
41But he protects#The sense is that of making something inaccessibly high, like a fortress the needy from misery,
and he makes their families like a flock.
42The upright see it and are glad,
and all wickedness shuts its mouth.
43Whoever is wise, then let him observe these things,
and let them consider Yahweh’s acts of loyal love.

BOOK FIVE
(Psalms 107–150)
Psalm 107
1Give thanks to the Lord because he is good,
because his mercy endures forever.
2Let the people the Lord defended repeat these words.
They are the people he defended from the power of their enemies
3and gathered from other countries,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
4They wandered around the desert on a deserted road
without finding an inhabited city.
5They were hungry and thirsty.
They began to lose hope.
6In their distress they cried out to the Lord.
He rescued them from their troubles.
7He led them on a road that went straight to an inhabited city.
8Let them give thanks to the Lord because of his mercy.
He performed his miracles for Adam’s descendants.
9He gave plenty to drink to those who were thirsty.
He filled those who were hungry with good food.
10Those who lived in the dark, in death’s shadow
were prisoners in misery.
They were held in iron chains
11because they had rebelled against God’s words and had despised the advice given by the Most High.
12So he humbled them with hard work.
They fell down, but no one was there to help them.
13In their distress they cried out to the Lord.
He saved them from their troubles.
14He brought them out of the dark, out of death’s shadow.
He broke apart their chains.
15Let them give thanks to the Lord because of his mercy.
He performed his miracles for Adam’s descendants.
16He shattered bronze gates
and cut iron bars in two.
17Fools suffered because of their disobedience
and because of their crimes.
18All food was disgusting to them,
and they came near death’s gates.
19In their distress they cried out to the Lord.
He saved them from their troubles.
20He sent his message and healed them.
He rescued them from the grave.
21Let them give thanks to the Lord because of his mercy.
He performed his miracles for Adam’s descendants.
22Let them bring songs of thanksgiving as their sacrifice.
Let them tell in joyful songs what he has done.
23Those who sail on the sea in ships,
who do business on the high seas,
24have seen what the Lord can do,
the miracles he performed in the depths of the sea.
25He spoke, and a storm began to blow,
and it made the waves rise high.
26The sailors aboard ship rose toward the sky.
They plunged into the depths.
Their courage melted in ⌞the face of⌟ disaster.
27They reeled and staggered like drunks,
and all their skills as sailors became useless.
28In their distress they cried out to the Lord.
He led them from their troubles.
29He made the storm calm down,
and the waves became still.
30The sailors were glad that the storm was quiet.
He guided them to the harbor they had longed for.
31Let them give thanks to the Lord because of his mercy.
He performed his miracles for Adam’s descendants.
32Let them glorify him when the people are gathered for worship.
Let them praise him in the company of respected leaders.
33He changes rivers into a desert,
springs into thirsty ground,
34and fertile ground into a layer of salt
because of the wickedness of the people living there.
35He changes deserts into lakes
and dry ground into springs.
36There he settles those who are hungry,
and they build cities to live in.
37They plant in fields and vineyards
that produce crops.
38He blesses them, and their numbers multiply,
and he does not allow a shortage of cattle.
39They became few in number and were humiliated
because of oppression, disaster, and sorrow.
40He poured contempt on their influential people
and made them stumble around in a pathless desert.
41But now he lifts needy people high above suffering
and makes their families like flocks.
42Decent people will see this and rejoice,
but all the wicked people will shut their mouths.
43Let those who ⌞think⌟ they are wise
pay attention to these things
so that they may understand the Lord’s blessings.
