Proverbs 26
26
1 Like snow in the summer and like rain at the harvest,
so honor is not fitting for a fool.
2Like the sparrow is to fluttering and like the swallow is to flying,
so an undeserved curse does not go forth.
3A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey,
and a rod for the back of fools.
4Do not answer a fool according to his folly
lest you become like him—even you.
5Answer a fool according to his folly,
or else he will be wise in his own eyes.
6Like cutting off feet or drinking violence,
so is he who sends messages in the hand of a fool.
7Like legs that hang limp from a lame person,
so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
8Like binding a stone in a sling,
so is giving honor to a fool.
9Like a thorn that goes up in the hand of a drunkard,
so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10Like an archer who wounds everyone,
so is he who hires a fool or he who hires passersby.
11Like a dog returning to his vomit
is a fool reverting to his folly.
12Do you see a man wise in his own eyes?
There is more hope for a fool than for him.
13A lazy person says “A lion is in the road!
A lion among the streets!”
14The door turns on its hinge,
and a lazy person on his bed.
15A lazy person buries his hands in the dish;
he is too tired to return it to his mouth.
16A lazy person is wiser in his eyes
than seven who answer discreetly.
17Grabbing onto the ears of a dog
passing by is one who meddles in a quarrel that is not his own.
18Like a maniac who shoots
firebrands, arrows, and death,
19so is a man who deceives his neighbor,
but says “Am I not joking?”
20For lack of wood, a fire goes out,
and where there is no whisperer, quarreling will cease.
21As charcoal is to hot embers and wood is to fire,
so a man of quarrels is to kindling strife.
22The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels,
and they go down to the inner parts of the body.
23Like impure silver#Literally “silver of impurities” which overlays an earthen vessel,
so are smooth lips and an evil heart#Or “mind”.
24On his lips, an enemy will pretend,
but inside#Literally “in his midst” he will harbor deceit.
25When he makes his voice gracious, do not believe him,
for seven abominations are in his heart.
26Though hatred is covered with guile,
its evil will be exposed in the assembly.
27He who digs a pit, in it he will fall,
and he who rolls a stone, on him it will come back.
28A tongue of deceit hates its victim,
and a flattering mouth makes ruin.

Proverbs 26
1¶ As snow in summer and as rain in harvest, so honour is not suited for a fool.
2¶ As the sparrow in its wandering, as the swallow in its flight, so the curse causeless shall never come.
3¶ A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool’s back.
4¶ Never answer a fool according to his folly lest thou also be like unto him.
5Answer the fool showing him his folly lest he be wise in his own conceit.
6¶ He that gives responsibility to one who is not able to carry it out is like him that sends a message by the hand of a fool, and he shall drink the damage.
7Like unto the way that the one who is lame walks, so is a proverb in the mouth of the fool.
8As he that binds the stone in the sling, so is he that gives honour to a fool.
9 As thorns sunk into the hand of one who is drunk, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10¶ The great God that formed all things rewards both the fool and transgressors.
11¶ As a dog returns to his vomit, so the fool returns to his folly.
12¶ Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
13¶ The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.
14¶ As the door turns upon his hinges, so does the slothful upon his bed.
15¶ The slothful hides his hand in his bosom; it grieves him to bring it again to his mouth.
16¶ The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can give him counsel.
17¶ He that passes by and meddles with strife not belonging to him is like one that takes a dog by the ears.
18¶ As a mad man who casts firebrands, arrows, and death,
19so is the man that destroys his friend and says, Am I not in sport?
20¶ Where there is no wood, the fire goes out, so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceases.
21Charcoal for burning coals and wood for fire, and a contentious man to kindle strife.
22The words of a talebearer seem smooth, but they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
23¶ Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.
24¶ He that hates dissembles with his lips and lays up deceit within him;
25when he speaks fair, do not believe him, for there are seven abominations in his heart.
26Even though his hatred is covered up in the desert, his wickedness shall be showed before the whole congregation.
27¶ Whosoever digs a pit shall fall therein, and he that rolls a stone, it will return upon him.
28¶ A lying tongue hates those that are afflicted by it, and a flattering mouth works ruin.
