Jesus Is Raised
1 Now on the first day of the week, at very early dawn, they came back to the tomb bringing the fragrant spices which they had prepared. 2And they found the stone had been rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“went in”) which is understood as temporal went in, they did not find the body.#Some manuscripts add “of the Lord Jesus” 4And it happened that while they were perplexed about this, behold, two men in gleaming clothing stood near them. 5And as#*Here “as” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participles (“were” and “bowed”) they were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, “Why are you looking for the living among the dead? 6He is not here, but has been raised! Remember how he spoke to you while he#*Here “while” is supplied as a component of the participle (“was”) which is understood as temporal was still in Galilee, 7saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of men who are sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise?” 8And they remembered his words, 9and when they#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“returned”) which is understood as temporal returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10Now Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the others with them were telling these things to the apostles. 11And these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they refused to believe them. 12But Peter got up and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“got up”) has been translated as a finite verb ran to the tomb, and bending over to look, he saw only the strips of linen cloth, and he went away to his home#Or “wondering to himself,” if the prepositional phrase modifies the following participle wondering what had happened.

13And behold, on that same day, two of them were traveling to a village named#Literally “to which the name” Emmaus that was sixty stadia#A “stade” or “stadium” (plur. “stadia”) is about 607 ft (187 m) distant from Jerusalem, 14and they were conversing with one another about all these things that had happened. 15And it happened that while they were conversing, and discussing, Jesus himself also approached and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“approached”) has been translated as a finite verb began to go along with#*The imperfect tense has been translated as ingressive here (“began to go along with”) them, 16but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. 17And he said to them, “What are these matters that you are discussing with one another as you#*Here “as” is supplied as a component of the participle (“walking along”) which is understood as temporal are walking along?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18And one of them, named#Literally “by name” Cleopas, answered and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“answered”) has been translated as a finite verb said to him, “Are you the only one living near Jerusalem and not knowing the things that have happened in it in these days?” 19And he said to them, “What things?” So they said to him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, a man who was a prophet, powerful in deed and word before God and all the people, 20and how our chief priests and rulers handed him over to a sentence of death, and crucified him. 21But we were hoping that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. But in addition to all these things, this is the third day since#Literally “he spends from which” these things took place. 22But also some women from among us astonished us, who were at the tomb early in the morning, 23and when they#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“find”) which is understood as temporal did not find his body, they came back saying they had seen even a vision of angels, who said that he was alive! 24And some of those with us went out to the tomb and found it#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation like this, just as the women had also said, but him they did not see.” 25And he said to them, “O foolish and slow in heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26Was it not necessary that the Christ suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things concerning himself in all the scriptures. 28And they drew near to the village where they were going, and he acted as though he was going farther. 29And they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is getting toward evening, and by this time the day is far spent.” And he went in to stay with them. 30And it happened that when he reclined at the table with them, he took the bread and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“took”) has been translated as a finite verb gave thanks, and after#*Here “after” is supplied as a component of the participle (“breaking”) which is understood as temporal breaking it,#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation he gave it#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation to them. 31And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he became invisible to them. 32And they said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was speaking with us on the road, while he was explaining the scriptures to us?” 33And they got up that same hour and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“got up”) has been translated as a finite verb returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven and those with them assembled, 34saying, “The Lord has really been raised, and has appeared to Simon!” 35And they began describing#*The imperfect tense has been translated as ingressive here (“began describing”) what happened#Literally “the things” on the road, and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

36And while#*Here “while” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“were saying”) they were saying these things, he himself stood there among them.#Some manuscripts add “and said to them, ‘Peace to you!’ ” 37But they were startled and became terrified, and#*Here “and” is supplied because the two previous participles (“startled” and “terrified”) have been translated as finite verbs thought they had seen a ghost. 38And he said to them, “Why are you frightened? The Resurrection

Remember how he told you, #ch. 9:22, 44; Matt. 17:22, 23; Mark 9:30, 31; [ver. 44]while he was still in Galilee, 7#[See ver. 6 above] that the Son of Man #See ch. 13:33 must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and #See Matt. 20:19 be crucified and on #See ch. 9:22the third day rise.” 8And #John 2:22; 12:1they remembered his words, 9and returning from the tomb they #[John 20:18]told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10Now it was #Matt. 27:56; Mark 15:40, 41 Mary Magdalene and #ch. 8:3Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and #Mark 16:11; See Mark 16:16they did not believe them. 12But #John 20:3-6 Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw #John 19:40the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.
On the Road to Emmaus
13That very day #Mark 16:12two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles#24:13 Greek sixty stadia; a stadion was about 607 feet or 185 meters from Jerusalem, 14and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16#John 20:14; 21:4; [ver. 31; ch. 9:45; 18:34]But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was #See Matt. 21:11 a prophet #Acts 2:22; [Acts 7:22]mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20and #Acts 2:23; 5:30; 13:27, 28; 1 Thess. 2:15 how our chief priests and #ch. 23:13, 35; John 3:1; 7:26, 48; 12:42; Acts 3:17; 4:5, 8; 13:27; [1 Cor. 2:8]rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21But we had hoped that he was #See ch. 1:68; 1 Pet. 1:18 the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now #ver. 7the third day since these things happened. 22Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. #ver. 1They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23and #ver. 3 when they did not find his body, they came back saying that #ver. 4, 5, 9they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24#ver. 12; John 20:3Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26#ver. 7, 44, 46; Heb. 2:10; 12:2; 1 Pet. 1:11; See Acts 3:18 Was it not necessary that #See Matt. 1:17 the Christ should suffer these things and enter into #See ch. 9:26his glory?” 27And #Acts 8:35 beginning with #Gen. 3:15; 12:3; 22:18; Num. 21:9; 24:17; [John 1:45; 5:46] Moses and #2 Sam. 7:12-16; Isa. 7:14; 9:6; 50:6; 52:13–53:12; 61:1; Jer. 23:5, 6; Dan. 7:13, 14; 9:24-27; Mic. 5:2; Zech. 6:12; 9:9; 12:10; 13:7; [Acts 13:27]all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
28So they drew near to the village to which they were going. #[Mark 6:48]He acted as if he were going farther, 29but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and #ch. 9:12 (Gk.)the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30When he was at table with them, he took the bread and #See Matt. 14:19blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31#[ver. 16] And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And #[ch. 4:30]he vanished from their sight. 32They said to each other, #Ps. 39:3 “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he #ver. 45opened to us the Scriptures?” 33And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they #Mark 16:13; Acts 17:3 found the eleven and #[Acts 1:14]those who were with them gathered together, 34saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and #1 Cor. 15:5has appeared to Simon!” 35Then they told what had happened on the road, and #ver. 30, 31 how he was known to them in #See Acts 2:42the breaking of the bread.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
36As they were talking about these things, #Mark 16:14; John 20:19Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37But they were #ch. 21:9 startled and #ver. 5 frightened and #[Matt. 14:26; Mark 6:49]thought they saw a spirit. 38And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. #1 John 1:1; [John 20:27]Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40And when he had said this, #John 20:20he showed them his hands and his feet. 41And while they still disbelieved #Acts 12:14; [Gen. 45:26] for joy and were marveling, #John 21:5he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish,#24:42 Some manuscripts add and some honeycomb 43and he took it and ate before them.
44Then he said to them, #See ver. 6 “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, #See ver. 27that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45Then #ver. 32; [Job 33:16; Ps. 119:18; Acts 16:14; 1 John 5:20]he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46and said to them, “Thus #See Matt. 26:24 it is written, #See ver. 7, 26 that the Christ should suffer and on the third day #John 20:9rise from the dead, 47and that #Acts 5:31; See Acts 2:38 repentance for#24:47 Some manuscripts and the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed #See Acts 4:12 in his name #ch. 2:32; Gen. 12:3; Ps. 22:27; Isa. 2:2; 49:6; Hos. 2:23; Mal. 1:11; Matt. 28:19 to all nations, #Acts 10:37; Gal. 3:8beginning from Jerusalem. 48#Acts 1:8, 22; 2:32; 3:15; 5:32; 10:39, 41; 13:31; 1 Pet. 5:1; [John 15:27; 1 Cor. 15:15]You are witnesses of these things. 49And behold, I am sending #John 14:26; Acts 1:4; [Acts 2:33; Eph. 1:13]; See Acts 2:16, 17 the promise of my Father upon you.
