Joshua’s Farewell Address
1And it happened, after a long time,#Literally “many days” after Yahweh had given rest to Israel from all their surrounding enemies, and after Joshua was old and well-advanced in years,#Literally “he went into the days” 2Joshua summoned all Israel, their elders, heads, judges, and officials, and he said to them, “I am old and well-advanced in years,#Literally “I went into the days” 3and you have seen all that Yahweh your God has done to all these nations for your sake,#Literally “because of your presence” for Yahweh your God is fighting for you. 4Look! I have allotted to you these remaining nations as an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, to the Great Sea#That is, the Mediterranean in the west.#Literally “to the setting of the sun” 5And Yahweh your God will push them back before you#Literally “from your presence” and drive them out of your sight,#Literally “from your face” and you will possess their land, just as Yahweh your God promised to you. 6Be very strong to observe carefully all that is written in the scroll of the law of Moses so as not to turn aside from it, to the right or left, 7so as not to go among these remaining nations with you; do not profess#Literally “do not mention” the name of their gods, and do not swear by them, serve them, or bow down to them.#Literally “bow yourselves down to them” 8But hold fast to Yahweh your God, just as you have done up to this day. 9Yahweh has driven out before you great and strong nations; and as for you, nobody has withstood#Literally “a man has not stood in your presence” you to this day. 10One of your men put to flight a thousand, for Yahweh your God is fighting for you, just as he promised you. 11Take utmost care for the sake of your life to love Yahweh your God, 12for if indeed you turn back and join these remaining nations among you,#Literally “with you” and you intermarry with them, marrying their women and they yours,#Literally “you go into them and they into you” 13know for certain that Yahweh your God will not continue to drive out#Literally “will not drive out again” these nations from before you; they will be for you a snare and a trap, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that Yahweh your God has given to you.
14Look! I am about to die,#Literally “I am going today on the way of all the earth” and you know in all your hearts#Hebrew “heart” and souls#Hebrew “soul”; or “inner self” that not one thing failed#Literally “fell” from all the good things that Yahweh your God promised concerning you; everything has been fulfilled;#Literally “has come out” not one thing failed.#Literally “not one thing fell from it” 15But just as all the good things#Hebrew “thing” came to you that Yahweh your God promised, so will Yahweh bring to you all the bad things#Hebrew “things” until he has destroyed you from this good land that Yahweh your God has given to you. 16If you transgress the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he commanded to you, and you go and serve other gods and bow down to them, Yahweh’s anger will be kindled#Literally “Yahweh’s nose will become hot” against you, and you will perish quickly from the good land that he has given to you.”

Joshua’s Final Words to Israel
1The years passed, and the Lord had given the people of Israel rest from all their enemies. Joshua, who was now very old, 2called together all the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel. He said to them, “I am now a very old man. 3You have seen everything the Lord your God has done for you during my lifetime. The Lord your God has fought for you against your enemies. 4I have allotted to you as your homeland all the land of the nations yet unconquered, as well as the land of those we have already conquered—from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea#23:4 Hebrew the Great Sea. in the west. 5This land will be yours, for the Lord your God will himself drive out all the people living there now. You will take possession of their land, just as the Lord your God promised you.
6“So be very careful to follow everything Moses wrote in the Book of Instruction. Do not deviate from it, turning either to the right or to the left. 7Make sure you do not associate with the other people still remaining in the land. Do not even mention the names of their gods, much less swear by them or serve them or worship them. 8Rather, cling tightly to the Lord your God as you have done until now.
9“For the Lord has driven out great and powerful nations for you, and no one has yet been able to defeat you. 10Each one of you will put to flight a thousand of the enemy, for the Lord your God fights for you, just as he has promised. 11So be very careful to love the Lord your God.
12“But if you turn away from him and cling to the customs of the survivors of these nations remaining among you, and if you intermarry with them, 13then know for certain that the Lord your God will no longer drive them out of your land. Instead, they will be a snare and a trap to you, a whip for your backs and thorny brambles in your eyes, and you will vanish from this good land the Lord your God has given you.
14“Soon I will die, going the way of everything on earth. Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the Lord your God has come true. Not a single one has failed! 15But as surely as the Lord your God has given you the good things he promised, he will also bring disaster on you if you disobey him. He will completely destroy you from this good land he has given you. 16If you break the covenant of the Lord your God by worshiping and serving other gods, his anger will burn against you, and you will quickly vanish from the good land he has given you.”
