The Eastern Tribes Return
1Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, 2and he said to them, “You have observed all that Moses Yahweh’s servant commanded you, and you have listened#Or “you have obeyed” to my voice in all that I have commanded you; 3you have not forsaken your kinsmen#Or “brothers” these many days, up to this day, and you have observed the obligation of the command of Yahweh your God. 4So then, Yahweh your God has given rest to your kinsmen,#Or “brothers” just as he promised them; so then, turn and go to your tents to the land of your possession, which Moses Yahweh’s servant gave to you beyond the Jordan. 5Only be very careful to observe the commandment and law that Moses Yahweh’s servant commanded you, to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”#Or “inner self” 6And Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents. 7And to the half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, but to the other half Joshua had given a possession with their kinsmen#Or “brothers” beyond the Jordan to the west; and when Joshua sent them to their tents and blessed them, 8he said to them, “Return to your tents with much wealth, and with very much livestock, with silver, gold, copper, iron, and with very much clothing; divide the war-booty of your enemies with your kinsmen.”#Or “brothers” 9So the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home and departed with the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead to the land of their possession, which they had acquired according to the command of Yahweh#Literally “on the mouth of Yahweh” through the hand of Moses.
10And they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, and the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar on the Jordan, a large and imposing altar.#Literally “a large altar to appearance” 11And the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” heard it said that the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had built an altar next to the land of Canaan, in the region of the Jordan, on the side belonging to the Israelites.#Literally “sons/children of Israel” 12When the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” heard of it, the whole congregation of the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” gathered at Shiloh to go up against them for battle. 13And the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” sent to the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, Phinehas the priest son of Eleazar, 14and ten leaders with him, one leader for each#Literally “one leader, one leader” family#Literally “of the house of father” from each of the tribes of Israel; and each one was the head of his family#Literally “house of their fathers” among the clans of Israel.#Or “thousands of Israel” 15They came to the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying, 16“Thus says all the congregation of Yahweh: ‘What is this treachery that you have committed against the God of Israel by turning away today from following Yahweh, by building for yourselves an altar to rebel today against Yahweh? 17Is not the sin of Peor enough for us,#Literally “too little for us” from which we have not cleansed ourselves today, and for which a plague came to the congregation of Yahweh, 18that you must turn today from following Yahweh? If you rebel today against Yahweh, tomorrow he will be angry with all of the congregation of Israel; 19if, however, the land of your property is unclean, cross over to the land of Yahweh’s property, where Yahweh’s tabernacle resides,#Or “stands” and take possession among us. But you must not rebel against Yahweh or against us by building for yourselves an altar other than the altar of Yahweh our God. 20Did not Achan son of Zerah commit treachery with devoted things,#Or “consecrated possession” and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? And he alone#Literally “And he is one man that” did not perish because of his iniquity.’ ”
21And the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh spoke with the heads of the clans#Or “thousands” of Israel, 22“Yahweh, God of gods! Yahweh, God of gods knows. And let Israel itself know, if it was in rebellion or treachery against Yahweh, do not spare us this day 23for building for ourselves an altar to turn away from Yahweh, or if it was to offer burnt offerings,#Hebrew “offering” grain offerings,#Hebrew “offering” or fellowship offerings on it, may Yahweh himself take vengeance. 24But in fact, we have done this because of anxiety, because of a reason, saying, ‘In the future your children may say to our children, ‘What is the relationship between you and Yahweh the God of Israel?#Literally “What is to you and to Yahweh the God of Israel” 25Yahweh has made the Jordan a border between us and you, the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben and Gad; you have no portion in Yahweh.’ So your children may put an end to our children worshiping#Or “seeing” Yahweh. 26So we said, ‘Let us build immediately for ourselves an altar, not for burnt offerings#Hebrew “offering” or for sacrifices;#Hebrew “sacrifice” 27instead, it is a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us for performing the serving of Yahweh in his presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and fellowship offerings; so that your children may not say in the future to our children, “You have no portion in Yahweh.” ’ 28And we thought, if they say to us and to our children in the future, we can say, ‘Look at this replica of the altar of Yahweh, which our ancestors#Or “fathers” made, not for burnt offerings#Hebrew “offering” or sacrifices;#Hebrew “sacrifice” rather, it is a witness between us and you.’ 29Far be it from us to rebel against Yahweh, to turn today from following Yahweh, to build an altar for burnt offerings,#Hebrew “offering” grain offerings,#Hebrew “offering” or sacrifices,#Hebrew “sacrifice” instead of the altar of Yahweh our God that is before his tabernacle.”
30Phinehas the priest, the leaders of the congregation, and the heads of the clans#Or “thousands” of Israel who were with him heard the words that the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh spoke, and they were satisfied.#Literally “it was good in their eyes” 31Phinehas the priest, son of Eleazar, said to the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, “Today we know that Yahweh is among us, because you have not committed this treachery against Yahweh. Therefore you have rescued the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” from the hand of Yahweh.”
32And Phinehas the priest, son of Eleazar, and the leaders returned from the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben and Gad, from the land of Gilead, to the land of Canaan to the Israelites,#Literally “sons/children of Israel” and they gave them their report.#Literally “they brought back a word to them” 33The report satisfied the Israelites;#Literally “The report was good in the eyes of the children of Israel” they blessed God, and they did not speak of going up for battle against them to destroy the land in which the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben and Gad were living.#Or “dwelling” 34The descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben and Gad called the altar Witness, “Because,” they said, “it is a witness between us that Yahweh is God.”

Joshua 22
22
1Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, 2and said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have hearkened unto my voice in all that I commanded you: 3ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God. 4And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he spake unto them: therefore now turn ye, and get you unto your tents, unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you beyond Jordan. 5Only take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. 6So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their tents. 7Now to the one half tribe of Manasseh Moses had given inheritance in Bashan: but unto the other half gave Joshua among their brethren beyond Jordan westward. Moreover when Joshua sent them away unto their tents, he blessed them, 8and spake unto them, saying, Return with much wealth unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren. 9And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
10And when they came unto the region about Jordan, that is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to. 11And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar in the forefront of the land of Canaan, in the region about Jordan, on the side that pertaineth to the children of Israel. 12And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war. 13And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest; 14and with him ten princes, one prince of a fathers' house for each of the tribes of Israel; and they were every one of them head of their fathers' houses among the thousands of Israel. 15And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying, 16Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the LORD, in that ye have builded you an altar, to rebel this day against the LORD? 17Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves unto this day, although there came a plague upon the congregation of the LORD, 18that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it will be, seeing ye rebel today against the LORD, that tomorrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel. 19Howbeit, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD'S tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against the LORD, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar besides the altar of the LORD our God. 20Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.
21Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and spake unto the heads of the thousands of Israel, 22The LORD, the God of gods, the LORD, the God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in trespass against the LORD, (save thou us not this day,) 23that we have built us an altar to turn away from following the LORD; or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meal offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it; 24and if we have not rather out of carefulness done this, and of purpose, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD, the God of Israel? 25for the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no portion in the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the LORD. 26Therefore we said, Let as now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice: 27but it shall be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no portion in the LORD. 28Therefore said we, It shall be, when they so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we shall say, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you. 29God forbid that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn away this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offering, for meal offering, or for sacrifice, besides the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.
30And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation, even the heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them well. 31And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we know that the LORD is in the midst of us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the LORD: now have ye delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD. 32And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again. 33And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and spake no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and the children of Gad dwelt. 34And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: For, said they, it is a witness between us that the LORD is God.
