Job 22

Eliphaz’s Third Speech

1Then#Hebrew “And” Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2“Can a man be of use to God?

Yes, can the wise be of use to him?

3Is it a pleasure to Shaddai if you are righteous,

or#Hebrew “and” a gain if you make your ways blameless?

4Does he reprove you because of your reverence

or enter into judgment with you?

5Is not your wickedness great,

and there is no end to your iniquities?

6“Indeed, you have required a pledge from your family for nothing,

and you have stripped off the clothes of the naked.

7You have given no water for the weary to drink,

and you withheld food from the hungry.

8And the land belongs to the man of power,#Literally “man of power for him”

and the favored#Literally “lifted up of face” lives in it.

9You have sent widows away empty-handed,

and the arms of orphans were crushed.

10Therefore trapping nets are all around you,

and panic suddenly terrifies you,

11or it is so dark you cannot see,

and a flood of water covers you.

12“Is not God in the height of the heavens?

But#Hebrew “And” see how lofty are the highest stars.#Literally “top of stars,” or “head of stars”

13And you ask, ‘What does God know?

Can he judge through deep gloom?

14Thick clouds are a covering for him, so that he does not see;

and he walks about on the dome of heaven.’

15Will you keep to the way of old

that the people of mischief have trod,

16who were snatched away before their time,#Literally “and not time”

whose foundation was washed away by a current?

17Those who said to God, ‘Turn away from us,’

and ‘What can Shaddai do to us?’

18Yet#Hebrew “And” he himself#Emphatic personal pronoun filled up their houses with good things,

but#Hebrew “and” the schemes of the wicked are repugnant to me.

19The righteous see, and they rejoice,

but#Hebrew “and” the innocent one mocks at them.

20Surely#Literally “If not” our foe perishes,

and fire has consumed their remainder.#Or “their wealth”

21“Please reconcile yourself with him,

and be at peace; in this way,#Literally “by them” good will come to you.

22Please receive instruction from his mouth,

and place his words in your heart.

23If you return to Shaddai, you will be restored;

if you remove wickedness from your tent,

24and if you put gold ore in the dust,

and the gold of Ophir in the rock of wadis,

25then#Hebrew “And” Shaddai will be your gold ore

and your precious silver.#Literally “silver of the best for you,” or “silver of the best belonging to you”

26Indeed, then you will delight yourself in Shaddai,

and you will expect that God will be good to you.#Literally “you will lift up to God your face”

27You will pray to him, and he will hear you,

and you will pay your vows.

28And you will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you,

and light will shine on your ways.

29When they are humiliated, you say,#Literally “and you say,” or “then you say” ‘It is pride,’

for#Hebrew “and” he saves the humble.#Literally “downward of eyes”

30He will deliver the guilty,

and he will escape because of the cleanness of your hands.”

Eliphaz

1Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:

2“Can a man be of benefit to God?

Can even a wise person benefit him?

3What pleasure would it give the Almighty if you were righteous?

What would he gain if your ways were blameless?

4“Is it for your piety that he rebukes you

and brings charges against you?

5Is not your wickedness great?

Are not your sins endless?

6You demanded security from your relatives for no reason;

you stripped people of their clothing, leaving them naked.

7You gave no water to the weary

and you withheld food from the hungry,

8though you were a powerful man, owning land—

an honored man, living on it.

9And you sent widows away empty-handed

and broke the strength of the fatherless.

10That is why snares are all around you,

why sudden peril terrifies you,

11why it is so dark you cannot see,

and why a flood of water covers you.

12“Is not God in the heights of heaven?

And see how lofty are the highest stars!

13Yet you say, ‘What does God know?

Does he judge through such darkness?

14Thick clouds veil him, so he does not see us

as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.’

15Will you keep to the old path

that the wicked have trod?

16They were carried off before their time,

their foundations washed away by a flood.

17They said to God, ‘Leave us alone!

What can the Almighty do to us?’

18Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things,

so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.

19The righteous see their ruin and rejoice;

the innocent mock them, saying,

20‘Surely our foes are destroyed,

and fire devours their wealth.’

21“Submit to God and be at peace with him;

in this way prosperity will come to you.

22Accept instruction from his mouth

and lay up his words in your heart.

23If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored:

If you remove wickedness far from your tent

24and assign your nuggets to the dust,

your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines,

25then the Almighty will be your gold,

the choicest silver for you.

26Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty

and will lift up your face to God.

27You will pray to him, and he will hear you,

and you will fulfill your vows.

28What you decide on will be done,

and light will shine on your ways.

29When people are brought low and you say, ‘Lift them up!’

then he will save the downcast.

30He will deliver even one who is not innocent,

who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”
