A Message Concerning Ammon
1Concerning the Ammonites:#Literally “sons of Ammon” Thus says Yahweh,
“Are there no sons for Israel?
Or is there no heir for him?
Why has Milcom taken possession of Gad,
and his people dwelled in its towns?
2Therefore#Literally “To thus” look, days are coming,” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh,
“and I will sound against Rabbah, the Ammonites,#Literally “sons of Ammon”
the alarm of the war,
and it will become as a mound of desolation,
and its daughters will burn in the fire.
Then Israel will dispossess his dispossessors,” says Yahweh.
3“Wail, Heshbon, for Ai is devastated.
Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah, put on sackcloth.
Lament and run back and forth among the walls.
For Milcom will go into exile,
his priests and his officials together.
4Why do you boast in your valleys?
Your valleys#Hebrew “valley” are ebbing.
O unfaithful daughter, who trusted in her treasures,
who said, ‘Who will come against me?’
5Look, I am going to bring dread on you,”
declares#Literally “a declaration of” Lord Yahweh of hosts,
“from all your surrounding neighbors.
And you will be scattered,
each one before it,#Literally “to the face of it”
and there is no one who gathers the fugitives.#Hebrew “fugitive”
6Yet afterward#Literally “after thus” I will restore
the fortunes#Hebrew “fortune” of the Ammonites,”#Literally “sons of Ammon” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh.
A Message Concerning Edom
7Concerning Edom, thus says Yahweh of hosts:
“Is there no longer wisdom in Teman?
Has counsel become lost from those who understand?
Is their wisdom rotting?
8Flee! Turn back! Get down low!#Literally “make deep to dwell”
O inhabitants of Dedan.
For I will bring upon him the disaster of Esau
at the time when I will punish him.
9If grape-gatherers come to you,
would they not leave gleanings?
If thieves in the night,
they destroy only enough for them.#Literally “their enough”
10But I have stripped Esau bare.
I have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to hide himself.
His offspring are devastated, along with#Literally “and” his brothers,
and his neighbors, and he is no more.#Literally “and not he”
11Leave your orphans. I will let them#Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation live.
And your widows, let them trust in me.”
12For thus says Yahweh, “Look, those who are not condemned#Literally “who there is not their justice” to drink the cup must certainly drink it.#Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation And are you the one who will go entirely unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you must certainly drink it.#Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation 13For I have sworn by myself,” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh, “that Bozrah will become as a horror, as a disgrace, as a waste, and as a curse. And all her towns will be everlasting sites of ruins.”#Literally “sites of ruins of eternity”
14I have heard a message from Yahweh,
and a messenger has been sent among the nations.
“Gather and come against her,
and rise for the battle.”
15“For look, I will make you small among the nations,
despised by the humankind.
16Your terror has deceived you,
the pride of your heart,
O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock,
you who seize the height of the hill.
Though you make your nest high like the eagle,
from there I will bring you down,” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh.
17“And Edom will become as a horror,
everyone who passes by it#Literally “all who passes by it” will be appalled,
and will hiss because of all its blows.
18As the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah
and their neighbors,” says Yahweh,
“no one#Literally “not a man” will live there,
and the son of humankind will not dwell as an alien in it.
19Look, like a lion he comes up from the thickets of the Jordan
to a pastureland by a constantly flowing stream.#Literally “a pasture of everflowing”
So I will chase him away hurriedly#Literally “I will do in an instant I will chase him away” from it.
And whoever is chosen I will appoint over it.
For who is like me, and who can summon me?
And who is this, the shepherd who can stand before me?”#Literally “to the face of me”
20Therefore#Literally “To thus” hear the plan of Yahweh that he has planned against Edom,
and his plans that he has planned against the inhabitants of Teman.
Surely#Literally “If not” they will drag them away,
the little ones of the flock.
Surely#Literally “If not” he will cause to be desolated over them
their grazing place.
21The earth will quake from the sound of their falling.
A cry of distress! Their voice will be heard at the Red Sea.#Hebrew “Sea of Reeds”
22Look, like an eagle he will go up and he will swoop down,
and he will spread out his wings against Bozrah.
And the heart of the warriors of Edom will be in that day
like the heart of a woman who is in labor.
A Message Concerning Damascus
23Concerning Damascus:
“Hamath and Arpad are ashamed,
for they have heard bad news;
they melt.
There is concern in the sea.
It is not able to keep quiet.
24Damascus has grown slack.
She has turned away to flee and panic.
Anxiety has seized her,
and labor pains have grasped her,
like a woman in labor.
25How the city of praise has not been abandoned!
The city of my joy!
26Therefore#Literally “To thus” her young men will fall in her public squares,
and all the soldiers#Literally “the men of the battle” will perish in that day,” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh of hosts.
27“And I will kindle a fire at the wall of Damascus,
and it will devour the citadel fortresses of Ben-hadad.”
A Message Concerning Kedar and the Kingdoms of Hazor
28Concerning Kedar and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor that Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon defeated. Thus says Yahweh:
“Rise up, go up against Kedar
and destroy the people#Or “sons” of the east.
29They will take their tents, and their flocks,
their tent curtains, and all their equipment,
and their camels they will carry away for themselves,
and they will call to them, ‘Terror is from all around.’
30Flee! Wander far away! Get down low!#Literally “Make deep to dwell”
O inhabitants of Hazor,” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh.
“For Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, has planned a plan against you.
And he has schemed#Or “planned” a scheme#Or “plan” against you.
31Rise up, go up against a nation which is at ease,
living securely,”#Literally “with confidence” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh.
“There are no gates and there are no bars#Hebrew “bar” for them,
they dwell alone.
32And their camels will become as plunder,
and the multitude of their livestock as spoil.
And I will scatter to every wind those who are trimmed to the side,
and from every side#Literally “all his sides” I will bring their disaster,” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh.
33“And Hazor will become as a lair of jackals,
a waste forever;
no one will live there,
and no son of humankind will dwell as an alien in it.”
A Message Concerning Elam
34The word of Yahweh that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah the king of Judah, saying,#Literally “to say” 35“Thus says Yahweh of hosts:
‘Look, I am going to break the bow of Elam,
the first and best of their might.
36And I will bring to Elam four winds,
from the four corners of heaven,
and I will scatter them to all these winds,
and there will not be a nation
where the scattered people of Elam will not go.
37So I will shatter Elam before#Literally “to the face of” their enemies,
and before#Literally “to the face of” the seekers of their life.
And I will bring disaster upon them,
my burning anger,#Literally “the blaze of my nose”’ declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh.
‘And I will send after them the sword
until I have destroyed them.
38And I will set my throne in Elam
and I will destroy from there king and officials,’ declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh.
39‘And then#Literally “And it will happen” in the last of the days
I will restore the fortunes#Hebrew “fortune” of Elam,’ declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh.”

Ezek 21.28-32; 25.1-7; Amos 1.13-15; Zeph 2.8-11. Concerning the Ammonites.
Thus says the Lord:
“Has Israel no sons?
Has he no heir?
Why then has Milcom dispossessed Gad,
and his people settled in its cities?
2Therefore, behold, the days are coming,
says the Lord,
when I will cause the battle cry to be heard
against Rabbah of the Ammonites;
it shall become a desolate mound,
and its villages shall be burned with fire;
then Israel shall dispossess those who dispossessed him,
says the Lord.
3“Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste!
Cry, O daughters of Rabbah!
Gird yourselves with sackcloth,
lament, and run to and fro among the hedges!
For Milcom shall go into exile,
with his priests and his princes.
4Why do you boast of your valleys,#49.4 Heb valleys, your valley flows
O faithless daughter,
who trusted in her treasures, saying,
‘Who will come against me?’
5Behold, I will bring terror upon you,
says the Lord God of hosts,
from all who are round about you,
and you shall be driven out, every man straight before him,
with none to gather the fugitives.
6“But afterward I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites, says the Lord.”

Is 34; 63.1-6; Ezek 25.12-14; 35; Amos 1.11-12; Obad; Mal 1.2-5. Concerning Edom.
Thus says the Lord of hosts:
“Is wisdom no more in Teman?
Has counsel perished from the prudent?
Has their wisdom vanished?
8Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of Dedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
the time when I punish him.
9If grape-gatherers came to you,
would they not leave gleanings?
If thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10But I have stripped Esau bare,
I have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and he is no more.
11Leave your fatherless children, I will keep them alive;
and let your widows trust in me.”
12For thus says the Lord: “If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, will you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13For I have sworn by myself, says the Lord, that Bozrah shall become a horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse; and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”
14I have heard tidings from the Lord,
and a messenger has been sent among the nations:
“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!”
15For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among men.
16The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,#49.16 Or Sela
who hold the height of the hill.
Though you make your nest as high as the eagle's,
I will bring you down from there,
says the Lord.
17“Edom shall become a horror; every one who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss because of all its disasters. 18As when Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbor cities were overthrown, says the Lord, no man shall dwell there, no man shall sojourn in her. 19Behold, like a lion coming up from the jungle of the Jordan against a strong sheepfold, I will suddenly make them#49.19 Gk Syr: Heb him run away from her; and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me? 20Therefore hear the plan which the Lord has made against Edom and the purposes which he has formed against the inhabitants of Teman: Even the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away; surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21At the sound of their fall the earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22Behold, one shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle, and spread his wings against Bozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart of a woman in her pangs.”

Is 17.1-3; Amos 1.3-5; Zech 9.1. Concerning Damascus.
“Hamath and Arpad are confounded,
for they have heard evil tidings;
they melt in fear, they are troubled like the sea#49.23 Cn: Heb there is trouble in the sea
which cannot be quiet.
24Damascus has become feeble, she turned to flee,
and panic seized her;
anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her,
as of a woman in travail.
25How the famous city is forsaken,#49.25 Vg: Heb not forsaken
the joyful city!#49.25 Syr Vg Tg: Heb city of my joy
26Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares,
and all her soldiers shall be destroyed in that day,
says the Lord of hosts.
27And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus,
and it shall devour the strongholds of Ben-hadad.”
28Concerning Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote.
Thus says the Lord:
“Rise up, advance against Kedar!
Destroy the people of the east!
29 #
Jer 6.25; 20.3,10; 46.5; Ps 31.13. Their tents and their flocks shall be taken,
their curtains and all their goods;
their camels shall be borne away from them,
and men shall cry to them: ‘Terror on every side!’
30Flee, wander far away, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of Hazor!
says the Lord.
For Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon
has made a plan against you,
and formed a purpose against you.
31“Rise up, advance against a nation at ease,
that dwells securely,
says the Lord,
that has no gates or bars,
that dwells alone.
32Their camels shall become booty,
their herds of cattle a spoil.
I will scatter to every wind
those who cut the corners of their hair,
and I will bring their calamity
from every side of them,
says the Lord.
33Hazor shall become a haunt of jackals,
an everlasting waste;
no man shall dwell there,
no man shall sojourn in her.”
34The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah.
35Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the mainstay of their might; 36and I will bring upon Elam the four winds from the four quarters of heaven; and I will scatter them to all those winds, and there shall be no nation to which those driven out of Elam shall not come. 37I will terrify Elam before their enemies, and before those who seek their life; I will bring evil upon them, my fierce anger, says the Lord. I will send the sword after them, until I have consumed them; 38and I will set my throne in Elam, and destroy their king and princes, says the Lord.
39“But in the latter days I will restore the fortunes of Elam, says the Lord.”
