1 And then#Literally “And it was” in the seventh month Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, from the offspring of the kingship, and one of the chief officers of the king, came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam at Mizpah, along with#Literally “and” ten men. And they ate bread together there at Mizpah. 2And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah got up, along with#Literally “and” the ten men who were with him, and they struck Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword and killed him whom the king of Babylon had appointed in an official position over the land. 3Then Ishmael killed all the Judeans who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, along with#Literally “and” the Chaldeans who were found there, the soldiers.#Literally “the men of the war”
The Massacre of the Mourners
4And then#Literally “And it was” on the second day of the killing of Gedaliah—and no one#Literally “not a man” knew— 5then men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, eighty men with shaven beards#Hebrew “beard” and torn garments, who had cut themselves with blades, having#Literally “and” grain offerings#Hebrew “grain offering” and frankincense in their hands#Hebrew “hand” to bring to the temple#Literally “house” of Yahweh. 6And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah came out to meet them from Mizpah, weeping as he came.#Literally “coming he came and weeping” And then#Literally “And it was” as he was meeting them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam.” 7And then,#Literally “And it was” the moment of their coming to the middle of the city, then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, along with#Literally “and” the men who were with him, slaughtered#The Hebrew verb is singular them and threw them to the middle of the pit.#Or “cistern” 8But ten men were found among them, and they said to Ishmael, “You must not kill us, for we have#Literally “there is to us” hidden treasures in the field, wheat, and barley, and oil, and honey. So he refrained and he did not kill them in the midst of their fellow countrymen. 9Now the pit#Or “cistern” into which Ishmael threw all the corpses of the men whom he had killed along with#Literally “by the hand of” Gedaliah was the same one that King Asa had made because of Baasha the king of Israel, who was against him. Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain ones.
10Then Ishmael took captive all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah, the daughters of the king and all the people who were left at Mizpah, over whom Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard,#Hebrew “guards” had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. And Ishmael took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.#Literally “sons of Ammon”
11When Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies who were with him, heard#The Hebrew verb is singular all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, 12then they took all the men and went to fight against Ishmael the son of Nethaniah. And they met him at the great pool that is in Gibeon. 13And then,#Literally “And it was” the moment that all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies who were with him, they were glad. 14So all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned around and returned and went to Johanan the son of Kareah. 15But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped with eight men from#Literally “from the face of” Johanan, and they went to the Ammonites.#Literally “sons of Ammon”
16Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies who were with him took from Mizpah all the rest of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after he had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, strong men, soldiers,#Literally “the men of the war” and women, and little children, and eunuchs whom he brought back from Gibeon. 17And they set out and stayed at the lodging place of Chimham that is near Bethlehem, intending#Literally “going” to go to Egypt 18because of the Chaldeans. For they were afraid of them,#Literally “from the face of them” because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed in an official position over the land.

Jeremiah 41
41
1Now it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, and one of the chief officers of the king, and ten men with him, came unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and there they did eat bread together in Mizpah. 2Then arose Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and the ten men that were with him, and smote Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan with the sword, and slew him, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land. 3Ishmael also slew all the Jews that were with him, even with Gedaliah, at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans that were found there, even the men of war. 4And it came to pass the second day after he had slain Gedaliah, and no man knew it, 5that there came certain from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, even fourscore men, having their beards shaven and their clothes rent, and having cut themselves, with oblations and frankincense in their hand, to bring them to the house of the LORD. 6And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went forth from Mizpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went: and it came to pass, as he met them, he said unto them, Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. 7And it was so, when they came into the midst of the city, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah slew them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he, and the men that were with him. 8But ten men were found among them that said unto Ishmael, Slay us not: for we have stores hidden in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he forbare, and slew them not among their brethren. 9Now the pit wherein Ishmael cast all the dead bodies of the men whom he had slain, by the side of Gedaliah, (the same was that which Asa the king had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel,) Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with them that were slain. 10Then Ishmael carried away captive all the residue of the people that were in Mizpah, even the king's daughters, and all the people that remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam: Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive, and departed to go over to the children of Ammon.
11But when Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, 12then they took all the men, and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and found him by the great waters that are in Gibeon. 13Now it came to pass that when all the people which were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, then they were glad. 14So all the people that Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah cast about and returned, and went unto Johanan the son of Kareah. 15But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men, and went to the children of Ammon. 16Then took Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after that he had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, even the men of war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought again from Gibeon: 17and they departed, and dwelt in Geruth Chimham, which is by Bethlehem, to go to enter into Egypt, 18because of the Chaldeans: for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon made governor over the land.
