1 And then#Literally “And it was” in the seventh month Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, from the offspring of the kingship, and one of the chief officers of the king, came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam at Mizpah, along with#Literally “and” ten men. And they ate bread together there at Mizpah. 2And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah got up, along with#Literally “and” the ten men who were with him, and they struck Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword and killed him whom the king of Babylon had appointed in an official position over the land. 3Then Ishmael killed all the Judeans who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, along with#Literally “and” the Chaldeans who were found there, the soldiers.#Literally “the men of the war”
The Massacre of the Mourners
4And then#Literally “And it was” on the second day of the killing of Gedaliah—and no one#Literally “not a man” knew— 5then men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, eighty men with shaven beards#Hebrew “beard” and torn garments, who had cut themselves with blades, having#Literally “and” grain offerings#Hebrew “grain offering” and frankincense in their hands#Hebrew “hand” to bring to the temple#Literally “house” of Yahweh. 6And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah came out to meet them from Mizpah, weeping as he came.#Literally “coming he came and weeping” And then#Literally “And it was” as he was meeting them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam.” 7And then,#Literally “And it was” the moment of their coming to the middle of the city, then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, along with#Literally “and” the men who were with him, slaughtered#The Hebrew verb is singular them and threw them to the middle of the pit.#Or “cistern” 8But ten men were found among them, and they said to Ishmael, “You must not kill us, for we have#Literally “there is to us” hidden treasures in the field, wheat, and barley, and oil, and honey. So he refrained and he did not kill them in the midst of their fellow countrymen. 9Now the pit#Or “cistern” into which Ishmael threw all the corpses of the men whom he had killed along with#Literally “by the hand of” Gedaliah was the same one that King Asa had made because of Baasha the king of Israel, who was against him. Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain ones.
10Then Ishmael took captive all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah, the daughters of the king and all the people who were left at Mizpah, over whom Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard,#Hebrew “guards” had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. And Ishmael took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.#Literally “sons of Ammon”
11When Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies who were with him, heard#The Hebrew verb is singular all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, 12then they took all the men and went to fight against Ishmael the son of Nethaniah. And they met him at the great pool that is in Gibeon. 13And then,#Literally “And it was” the moment that all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies who were with him, they were glad. 14So all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned around and returned and went to Johanan the son of Kareah. 15But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped with eight men from#Literally “from the face of” Johanan, and they went to the Ammonites.#Literally “sons of Ammon”
16Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies who were with him took from Mizpah all the rest of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after he had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, strong men, soldiers,#Literally “the men of the war” and women, and little children, and eunuchs whom he brought back from Gibeon. 17And they set out and stayed at the lodging place of Chimham that is near Bethlehem, intending#Literally “going” to go to Egypt 18because of the Chaldeans. For they were afraid of them,#Literally “from the face of them” because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed in an official position over the land.

Jeremiah 41
41
1In the seventh month of the year, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, a member of the royal family and one of the king's chief officers, came with ten of his men to see Gedaliah at Mizpah. While they were eating to have a meal together, 2suddenly Ishmael and his ten men got up and attacked Gedaliah, killing him—the one appointed by the king of Babylon as the country's governor. 3Ishamel also killed all the other Judeans who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, along with the Babylonian soldiers there.
4The day after Gedaliah had been murdered and before anyone knew about it, 5a group of eighty men arrived from Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria. They had shaved off their beards, torn their clothes, and cut themselves.#41:5. All signs of extreme grief and mourning. They were carrying grain offerings and frankincense for the Lord's Temple. 6Ishmael came out to meet them from Mizpah, weeping as he went along. When Ishmael met the men, he said, “Come and see what's happened to Gedaliah son of Ahikam!”
7But when they arrived in town, Ishmael and his men killed most of#41:7. “Most of”: supplied for clarity in light of the next verse. them and threw their bodies into a cistern. 8But ten of them pleaded with Ishmael, “Don't kill us! We've got some good things hidden in the fields—wheat, barley, olive oil, and honey.” So Ishmael didn't kill them along with the others.
9(The cistern where Ishmael had thrown all the bodies of the men he'd killed, including Gedaliah, was a large one that King Asa had dug because of the threat of attack by Baasha king of Israel. Ishmael filled it with bodies.)
10Then Ishmael took all the people left in Mizpah prisoner, including the daughters of the king, as well as everyone else living there. These were the people that Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard had put under the care of Gedaliah. Ishmael took them prisoner and left to go to the Ammonites.
11Johanan and all the army commanders of the armies with him found out about all of Ishmael's crimes. 12So they assembled all their men and went to attack Ishmael. They caught up with him near the large pool in Gibeon.
13When Ishmael's prisoners saw Johanan and all the army commanders with him, they were happy. 14All those that Ishmael had taken prisoner at Mizpah turned around and ran back to Johanan. 15Ishmael and eight of his men managed to escape from Johanan and get away to the Ammonites.
16Then Johanan and all the army commanders with him took charge of the survivors from Mizpah he'd rescued from Ishmael in Gibeon—the soldiers, women, children, and court officials that Ishmael had taken prisoner after he'd killed Gedaliah. 17They set off for Geruth Chimham near Bethlehem and stayed there, before leaving for Egypt 18to get away from the Babylonians. They were afraid of what the Babylonians would do because Ishmael had assassinated Gedaliah, the governor of the country appointed by the king of Babylon.
