Hananiah, the False Prophet
1And it was in that same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah, the king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, that Hananiah, the son of Azzur, the prophet who was from Gibeon, said to me in the house of Yahweh before the eyes of the priests and all the people, saying,#Literally “to say” 2“Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, saying,#Literally “to say” ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3Within two years#Literally “In still two years days” I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the house of Yahweh which Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon took away from this place and brought to Babylon. 4And Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, the king of Judah, and all the exiles#Hebrew “exile” from Judah who went to Babylon, I will bring back to this place,’ declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh, ‘For I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’ ”
5Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet before the eyes of the priests and before the eyes of all the people who were standing in the house of Yahweh, 6and Jeremiah the prophet said, “Amen! May Yahweh do so; may Yahweh fulfill your words that you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the house of Yahweh and all the exiles#Hebrew “exile” from Babylon to this place. 7Nevertheless listen please to this word that I am speaking in your hearing#Literally “ears” and in the hearing#Literally “ears” of all the people, 8The prophets who were before#Literally “to the face of” me and before#Literally “to the face of” you from ancient times prophesied against many countries and against great kingdoms of war, and of disaster, and of plague. 9The prophet who prophesies peace, at the coming of the word of the prophet, will become known as the prophet that Yahweh has truly#Literally “in truth” sent.”
10Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it. 11Then Hananiah said before the eyes of all the people, saying,#Literally “to say” “Thus says Yahweh, ‘This is how I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, within two years,#Literally “in still two years days” from the neck of all the nations.’ ” And Jeremiah the prophet went on his way.
12And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah after Hananiah the prophet broke the yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, saying,#Literally “to say” 13“Go, and you must say to Hananiah, saying,#Literally “to say” ‘Thus says Yahweh, “You have broken yoke bars of wood, but you have made in place of them yoke bars of iron.” 14For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, to serve Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and they will serve him, and I have even given the animals#Hebrew “animal” of the open field to him.” ’ ”
15Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, “Please listen, Hananiah, Yahweh has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie. 16Therefore#Literally “To thus” thus says Yahweh, ‘Look, I am going to send you from the face of the earth. This year you will die because you have spoken rebellion against Yahweh.’ ” 17And Hananiah the prophet died in that same year in the seventh month.

The False Prophet Hananiah
1In the fifth month of the fourth year that Zedekiah#28:1 the fourth year … Zedekiah This was about 594–593 B.C. was king of Judah, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur spoke to me. Hananiah was from the town of Gibeon. Hananiah was in the Lord’s Temple when he spoke to me. The priests and all the people were there also. This is what Hananiah said: 2“The Lord All-Powerful, the God of the people of Israel, says: ‘I will break the yoke that the king of Babylon has put on the people of Judah. 3Before two years are over, I will bring back all the things that King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took from the Lord’s Temple. Nebuchadnezzar has carried those things to Babylon. But I will bring them back here to Jerusalem. 4I will also bring the king of Judah, Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim, back to this place. And I will bring back all the people of Judah that Nebuchadnezzar forced to leave their homes and go to Babylon,’ says the Lord. ‘So I will break the yoke that the king of Babylon put on the people of Judah.’”
5Then the prophet Jeremiah answered the prophet Hananiah. They were standing in the Temple of the Lord. The priests and all the people there could hear Jeremiah’s answer. 6Jeremiah said to Hananiah, “Amen! May the Lord do that. May the Lord make the message you say come true. May he bring the things of the Lord’s Temple back to this place from Babylon. And may he bring all those who were forced to leave their homes back to this place.
7“But listen to what I have to say to you and to all the people. 8There were prophets long before you and I became prophets, Hananiah. They spoke against many countries and great kingdoms and always warned that war, hunger, and disease would come to them. 9So the prophet who says that we will have peace must be tested. People can know that he really was sent by the Lord only if his message comes true.”
10Jeremiah was wearing a yoke around his neck. The prophet Hananiah took the yoke from Jeremiah’s neck and broke it. 11Then Hananiah spoke loudly so that all the people could hear him. He said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘In the same way, I will break the yoke of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. He put that yoke on all the nations of the world, but I will break it before two years are over.’”
After Hananiah said that, Jeremiah left the Temple.
12Then the message from the Lord came to Jeremiah. This happened after Hananiah had taken the yoke off Jeremiah’s neck and had broken it. 13The Lord said to Jeremiah, “Go and tell Hananiah that this is what the Lord says: ‘You have broken a wooden yoke, but I will make a yoke of iron in the place of the wooden yoke. 14The Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, is the one saying this. I will put a yoke of iron on the necks of all these nations. I will do that to make them serve King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and they will be slaves to him. I will even give Nebuchadnezzar control over the wild animals.’”
15Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah! The Lord did not send you. But you have made the people of Judah trust in lies. 16So this is what the Lord says: ‘Soon I will take you from this world, Hananiah. You will die this year, because you taught the people to turn against the Lord.’”
17Hananiah died in the seventh month of that same year.
