The Sin of Judah
1“The sin of Judah is written with an iron stylus,
with a point of diamond it is engraved
on the tablet of their heart,
and on the horns of their altars.
2As the remembering of their children,
so is the remembering of their altars
and their poles of Asherah worship
beside the leafy trees#Hebrew “tree” on the high hills.
3O my mountain in the open country,
I will give your wealth, all your treasures, for spoil,
your high places, because of your sin,
throughout all your territories.
4And you will let go your hand from your inheritance#Literally “you shall loose and in you from your inheritance”
that I gave to you,
and I will make you serve your enemies
in the land that you do not know,
for you kindled a fire in my anger,
until eternity it will be kindled.”
The One Who Trusts in Humankind Contrasted With the One Who Trusts in Yahweh
5Thus says Yahweh,
“Cursed is the person who trusts in humankind
and makes flesh his strength,#Literally “arm”
and turns aside his heart from Yahweh.
6And he will be like a juniper in the wilderness,#Or “Arabah”
and he will not see when good comes,
and he will dwell in the parched places in the desert,#Or “wilderness”
in a land of salt flats,#Hebrew “salt flat” where no one lives.
7Blessed be the person who trusts in Yahweh,
and Yahweh is his trust.
8For he will be like a tree planted by water,
and to the stream it sends its roots,
and it will not fear when heat comes,
and its leaves#Hebrew “leaf” will be luxuriant,
and in the year of drought it will not be anxious,
and it will not cease from the bearing of fruit.
9The heart is deceitful more than anything else,
and it is disastrous. Who can understand it?
10I, Yahweh, examine the mind,#Literally “heart”
I test the heart,#Literally “kidneys”
and give to each one according to his way,
according to the fruit of his deeds.
11Like a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay
is one who amasses wealth without justice.
In the middle of his days it will leave him,
and at his end he will prove to be a fool.”
The Fountain of Living Water
12A lofty throne of glory from the beginning
is the place of our sanctuary.
13O Yahweh, the hope of Israel,
all those who forsake you will be put to shame,
and those who turn aside from you in the earth will be recorded,
for they have forsaken the fountain of living water, Yahweh.
14Heal me, O Yahweh, and I will be healed,
save me, and I will be saved,
for you are my praise.
15Look, they are saying to me,
“Where is the word of Yahweh?
Please let it come.”
16But I, I have not run away from being a shepherd who follows you,#Literally “after you”
and I have not desired the disastrous day.
You, you know the pronouncement of my lips,
it was before your face.
17You must not become to me a terror,
you are my refuge in the day of disaster.
18Let my persecutors be put to shame,
but as for me,#Literally “I” do not let me be put to shame.
Let them be dismayed,
but as for me,#Literally “I” do not let me be dismayed.
Bring on them the day of disaster,
and with double destruction, destroy them.
The Sabbath Day
19Thus said Yahweh to me, “Go, and you must stand in the People’s Gate#Literally “gate of the sons/children of the people” through which the kings of Judah enter, and through which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem. 20And you must say to them, ‘Hear the word of Yahweh, kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem who enter through these gates. 21Thus says Yahweh, “Be on your guard for the sake of yourselves, that you must not carry a burden on the day of the Sabbath, and you must not bring it#Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation through the gates of Jerusalem. 22And you must not carry a burden from your houses on the day of the Sabbath, and you must not do any work. But you must declare holy the day of Sabbath, just as I commanded your ancestors.#Or “fathers” 23Yet they did not listen, and they did not incline their ear, and they hardened their neck so as to not hear, nor to receive discipline.
24“And it will happen, if you carefully listen to me,” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh, “to bring no burden through the gates of this city on the day of the Sabbath, but to declare holy the day of Sabbath, not to do on it any work, 25then kings and officials who sit on the throne of David will enter through the gates of this city riding in chariots#Hebrew “chariot” and on horses, they, and their officials, the people of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and this city will be inhabited forever.#Literally “to eternity” 26And they will come from the towns of Judah, and from all around Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the Shephelah, and from the hill country, and from the Negev, bringing burnt offerings,#Hebrew “burnt offering” and sacrifices,#Hebrew “sacrifice” and grain offerings,#Hebrew “grain offering” and frankincense, and bringing thank offerings#Hebrew “thank offering” to the house of Yahweh. 27But if you do not listen to me, to declare holy the day of the Sabbath, and to not carry a burden and enter through the gates of Jerusalem on the day of the Sabbath, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it will not be quenched.” ’ ”

Jeremiah 17
17
1The sin of Judah is inscribed with an iron stylus, engraved with an adamant#17:1. “Adamant”: an extremely hard stone used in the same way as diamond is today. Diamonds were unknown in Israel at that time. point, on their minds and on corners of their altars where they worship. 2Even their children remember to worship at their pagan altars and Asherah poles, set up by the green trees and on the high hills, 3on my mountain in the fields. I will hand over your wealth and all your valuable possessions as plunder, because of the sin committed on your pagan high places inside your country. 4You will have to give up the land I gave you. I will have your enemies make you their slaves in an unfamiliar country for you made my anger blaze, and it will burn forever.
5This is what the Lord says: Cursed are those who put their confidence in human beings, who trust in human strength and give up relying on the Lord. 6They will be like a shrub alone in the desert that isn't even aware when good things happen. It just goes on living in the dry desert, in a salt flat that's uninhabited.
7Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, who put their confidence in him. 8They are like trees planted by water, sending out roots toward the stream. They don't panic when it gets hot; their leaves are always green. They don't worry during a time of drought—they go on producing fruit.
9The mind is more deceptive than anything else—it's incurably sick! Who can possibly understand it? 10But I, the Lord, see what people are thinking. I examine their minds, so I can reward them depending on their attitudes and the way they behave.
11Like a partridge hatching eggs it didn't lay is someone who makes a fortune by cheating others. Their riches will fly away at midday, and in the end they'll look like a fool.
12Our Temple is a throne of glory, raised up high from the beginning. 13Lord, you are Israel's hope. Anyone who deserts you will be disgraced. Anyone who turns their back on you will vanish like names written in the dust, for they have abandoned the Lord, the source of living water.
14Please heal me, Lord, and I'll be healed; save me, and I'll be saved, for you are the one I praise.
15See how they keep on saying to me, “Where is the disaster that the Lord's predicted? Is it ever going to happen?”#17:15. A colloquial expression would be, “Bring it on!”
16But I haven't been in a hurry to give up being your shepherd. I haven't wanted the time of trouble to come. You know that whatever I said was said in front of you.
17Please don't be the one who terrifies me! You are my protection in the time of trouble. 18Bring shame on my persecutors, but not on me. Terrify them, but not me, Let them experience the time of trouble, and smash them to pieces.
19This is what the Lord told me: Go and stand at the main gate of the city, the one used by kings of Judah, and do the same at all the other gates of Jerusalem. 20Tell them, Listen to the Lord's message, kings of Judah, and all you people of Judah and Jerusalem who come in through these gates.
21This is what the Lord says: Pay attention, if you value your lives! Don't carry a load on the Sabbath day, and don't bring it through the gates of Jerusalem. 22Don't carry a load out of your houses, and don't do any work on the Sabbath day. Keep the Sabbath day holy, just as I ordered your forefathers. 23However, they refused to listen or pay attention. Instead they were stubborn and refused to obey or accept instruction.
24Listen carefully to me, says the Lord, and don't bring any load through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, and keep the Sabbath day holy, and don't do any work on it. 25Then kings and princes will enter through the gates of this city. They will sit on the throne of David. They will ride in chariots and on horses with their officials, accompanied by the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, and this city will be inhabited forever. 26People will come from the towns of Judah and everywhere around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin, and from the lowlands the hill country, and the Negev. They will bring burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and frankincense, and thank offerings to the Lord's Temple.
27But if you refuse to listen to me and keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying a load while entering the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will set its gates alight with a fire that can't be put out, and it will burn down Jerusalem's fortresses.
