Yahweh Appoints Jeremiah as a Prophet to the Nations
1The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, among the priests who were in Anathoth, in the land of Benjamin, 2to whom the word of Yahweh came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, the king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. 3It came also in the days of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, until the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, until the exile of Jerusalem in the fifth month.
4And the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,#Literally “to say”
5“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you came out from the womb I consecrated you;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
6Then I said, “Ah, Lord Yahweh! Look, I do not know how to speak, for I am a youth.”#Or “boy” 7But Yahweh said to me, “You must not say, ‘I am a youth,’#Or “boy” for to whomever#Literally “all of whom” I send you, you will go, and whatever#Literally “all of that” I command you, you will speak. 8Do not be afraid of them,#Literally “you must not be afraid from the faces of them” for I am with you to deliver you,” declares#Literally “declaration of” Yahweh. 9Then Yahweh stretched out his hand and he touched my mouth, and Yahweh said to me,
“Look, I have put my words in your mouth.
10See, I appoint you this day over the nations
and over the kingdoms,
to pluck up and to pull down,
and to destroy and to tear down,
to build and to plant.”
Yahweh Confirms Jeremiah’s Call
11And the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,#Literally “to say” “What are you seeing, Jeremiah?” And I said, “I am seeing a branch of an almond tree.” 12Then Yahweh said to me, “You did well to see, for I am watching over my word to perform it.” 13And the word of Yahweh came to me a second time, saying,#Literally “to say” “What are you seeing?” And I said, “I am seeing a boiling#Literally “blown upon” pot, and its face is from the face of the north.” 14Then Yahweh said to me, “From the north disaster will be unleashed#Or “opened” on all the inhabitants of the land. 15For, look, I am calling to all the clans#Or “families” of the kingdoms of the north,” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh, “and they will come and set each one his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all its surrounding walls, and against all the cities of Judah. 16And I will pass#Or “pronounce” my judgments on them because of all their wickedness in that they have forsaken me, and they made sacrifices to other gods, and they bowed in worship to the works of their hands. 17But you, you must gird your loins, and stand, and speak to them all that I command you. Do not be afraid of them,#Literally “You must not be filled with terror from the faces of them” or I will shatter you before#Literally “to the faces of” them. 18Now look, I have made you today#Literally “the day” as a fortified city and as an iron pillar and a bronze wall#Hebrew “walls” against all the land, against the kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests, and against the people of the land. 19And they will fight against you but they will not prevail against you, for I am with you,” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh, “to deliver you.”

Jeremiah 1
1
1These are the words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests living in Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.
2The Lord's message came to Jeremiah beginning in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah, son of Amon, king of Judah, 3and on through the time of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, up to the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, son of Josiah, king of Judah, which was when the people of Jerusalem went into exile.
4The Lord came and told me, 5“I knew exactly who you would be before I created you in your mother's womb; I chose you before you were born to be a prophet to the nations.”
6“Oh no, Lord God!” I replied. “I really don't know how to speak in public because I'm still too young!”
7“Don't say you're too young,” the Lord told me. “Go to everyone I send you to. Tell them everything I order you to say. 8Don't be afraid of them because I'll go with you and I'll look after you. This is the Lord's promise.”
9The Lord stretched out his hand, touched my mouth, and told me: “Look, I've put my words in your mouth. 10Today I've placed you over nations and kingdoms to pull up and tear down, to destroy and demolish, to build and plant.”
11The Lord's message came to me, asking, “Jeremiah, what can you see?”
“I see a twig from an almond tree,” I answered.
12“That's right, because I am watching#1:12. In Hebrew, the almond tree is called “wakeful” because it is the first tree to bloom in spring. to make sure what I say happens,” the Lord said.
13The Lord's message came to me again, asking, “What can you see?”
“I see a pot that's boiling,” I answered, “and it's tipping in this direction from the north.”
14Then the Lord told me, “Trouble brewing from the north will sweep out over everyone living in the country. 15Watch out! I'm going to summon all the nations and kings of the north,” declares the Lord. “Each of these kings will come and set up his throne right at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and attack all its fortifications and all the towns in Judah. 16I will carry out my sentence against the inhabitants for all their wickedness, because they abandoned me to burn incense to pagan gods, to worship idols they themselves made.
17You need to get yourself ready. You are going to stand before the people and tell them everything that I order you to say. Don't be scared by them, or I will scare you in front of them. 18Look! Today I have made you like a fortified city, a pillar of iron, a wall of bronze to stand against the whole country—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the country. 19They will fight against you but they won't defeat you, because I'll be there to rescue you,” declares the Lord.
