Yahweh Appoints Jeremiah as a Prophet to the Nations
1The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, among the priests who were in Anathoth, in the land of Benjamin, 2to whom the word of Yahweh came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, the king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. 3It came also in the days of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, until the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, until the exile of Jerusalem in the fifth month.
4And the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,#Literally “to say”
5“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you came out from the womb I consecrated you;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
6Then I said, “Ah, Lord Yahweh! Look, I do not know how to speak, for I am a youth.”#Or “boy” 7But Yahweh said to me, “You must not say, ‘I am a youth,’#Or “boy” for to whomever#Literally “all of whom” I send you, you will go, and whatever#Literally “all of that” I command you, you will speak. 8Do not be afraid of them,#Literally “you must not be afraid from the faces of them” for I am with you to deliver you,” declares#Literally “declaration of” Yahweh. 9Then Yahweh stretched out his hand and he touched my mouth, and Yahweh said to me,
“Look, I have put my words in your mouth.
10See, I appoint you this day over the nations
and over the kingdoms,
to pluck up and to pull down,
and to destroy and to tear down,
to build and to plant.”
Yahweh Confirms Jeremiah’s Call
11And the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,#Literally “to say” “What are you seeing, Jeremiah?” And I said, “I am seeing a branch of an almond tree.” 12Then Yahweh said to me, “You did well to see, for I am watching over my word to perform it.” 13And the word of Yahweh came to me a second time, saying,#Literally “to say” “What are you seeing?” And I said, “I am seeing a boiling#Literally “blown upon” pot, and its face is from the face of the north.” 14Then Yahweh said to me, “From the north disaster will be unleashed#Or “opened” on all the inhabitants of the land. 15For, look, I am calling to all the clans#Or “families” of the kingdoms of the north,” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh, “and they will come and set each one his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all its surrounding walls, and against all the cities of Judah. 16And I will pass#Or “pronounce” my judgments on them because of all their wickedness in that they have forsaken me, and they made sacrifices to other gods, and they bowed in worship to the works of their hands. 17But you, you must gird your loins, and stand, and speak to them all that I command you. Do not be afraid of them,#Literally “You must not be filled with terror from the faces of them” or I will shatter you before#Literally “to the faces of” them. 18Now look, I have made you today#Literally “the day” as a fortified city and as an iron pillar and a bronze wall#Hebrew “walls” against all the land, against the kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests, and against the people of the land. 19And they will fight against you but they will not prevail against you, for I am with you,” declares#Literally “a declaration of” Yahweh, “to deliver you.”

Jeremiah 1

1The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkijah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin: 2to whom the word of Jehovah came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign; 3it came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive, in the fifth month.
4And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, 5Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I hallowed thee, I appointed thee a prophet unto the nations. 6And I said, Alas, Lord Jehovah! behold, I cannot speak; for I am a child. 7But Jehovah said unto me, Say not, I am a child; for thou shalt go to whomsoever I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. 8Be not afraid of them; for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith Jehovah. 9And Jehovah put forth his hand and touched my mouth; and Jehovah said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. 10See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to pluck up, and to break down, and to destroy, and to overthrow, to build and to plant.
11And the word of Jehovah came to me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond-tree. 12And Jehovah said unto me, Thou hast well seen; for I am watchful over my word to perform it. 13And the word of Jehovah came to me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething-pot, and its face is from the north. 14And Jehovah said unto me, Out of the north shall evil break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land. 15For behold, I am calling all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith Jehovah, and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah: 16and I will pronounce my judgments against them for all their wickedness, in that they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands. 17Thou, therefore, gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I shall command thee: be not dismayed at them, lest I cause thee to be dismayed before them. 18And I, behold, I appoint thee this day as a strong city, and an iron pillar, and brazen walls, against the whole land; against the kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests, and against the people of the land. 19And they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee, saith Jehovah, to deliver thee.
