Judges 2
2
Israel Disobeys Yahweh
1And the angel of Yahweh went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, “I brought you up from Egypt, and I brought you to the land that I had promised to your ancestors.#Or “fathers” I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you. 2And as for you, do not make a covenant#Literally “cut a covenant” with the inhabitants of this land; break down their altars.’ But you did not listen to my voice. Why would you do such a thing?#Literally “What is this thing you have done?” 3Now I say, I will not drive them out from before you; they will become as thorns#Or “become snares;” some ancient manuscripts read “be adversaries” for you, and their gods will be a trap for you.” 4And as the angel of Yahweh spoke these words to all the Israelites,#Literally “sons/children of Israel” the people wept bitterly.#Literally “lifted up their voices and they wept” 5And they called the name of this place Bokim,#“Bokim” means “weepers” and there they sacrificed to Yahweh.
Joshua Dies
6And Joshua sent the people away, and the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” went each to their#Hebrew “his” own inheritance to take possession of the land. 7And the people served Yahweh all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who saw all the great work Yahweh had done for Israel. 8And Joshua son of Nun, servant of Yahweh, died at the age of one hundred and ten years.#Literally “a son of one hundred and ten years” 9They buried him within the border of his inheritance in Timnah-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim north of Mount Gaash. 10Moreover, that entire generation was gathered to their#Hebrew “his” ancestors,#Or “fathers” and another generation grew up after them who did not know Yahweh or the work he had done for Israel.#Judges 2:6–10 is repeated in Joshua 24:28–31
Israel Worships the Baals
11The Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and they served#Or “they worshiped” the Baals. 12They abandoned Yahweh the God of their ancestors,#Or “fathers” who brought them out from the land of Egypt. They followed#Literally “went after” other gods from the gods of the people who were around them; and they bowed down to them, and they provoked the anger of Yahweh. 13They abandoned Yahweh, and they served Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14So the anger of Yahweh was kindled#Literally “The nose of Yahweh became hot” against Israel, and he gave them into the hand of plunderers; and they plundered them, and he sold them into the hand of their enemies from all sides. They were unable to withstand their enemies any longer. 15Whenever#Literally “At all that” they went out, the hand of Yahweh was against them to harm them, just as Yahweh warned, and just as Yahweh had sworn to them. And they were very distressed.#Literally “it was very cramped for them”
16Then Yahweh raised up leaders,#Or “judges” and they delivered them from the hand of their plunderers. 17But they did not listen to their leaders,#Or “judges” but lusted after other gods and bowed down to them. They turned away quickly from the way that their ancestors#Or “fathers” went, who had obeyed the commandment of Yahweh; they did not do as their ancestors. 18And when Yahweh raised leaders#Or “judges” for them, Yahweh was with the leader,#Or “judge” and he delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the leader,#Or “judge” for Yahweh was moved by their groaning because of their persecutors and oppressors. 19But when the leader#Or “judge” died they relapsed and acted corruptly, more than their ancestors,#Or “fathers” following other gods, serving them,#Or “worshiping them” and bowing down to them. They would not give up their deeds or their stubborn ways. 20So the anger of Yahweh burned#Literally “So the nose of Yahweh became hot” against Israel, and he said, “Because this people transgressed my covenant that I commanded their ancestors,#Or “fathers” and have not obeyed my voice, 21I will not again drive out anyone from before them from the nations that Joshua left when he died, 22in order to test Israel whether or not they would observe the way of Yahweh, to walk in it just as their ancestors#Or “fathers” did.” 23So Yahweh left those nations; he did not drive them out at once, and he did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

Judges 2
2
1And the angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you: 2and ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars: but ye have not hearkened unto my voice: why have ye done this? 3Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. 4And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept. 5And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.
6Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land. 7And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the LORD, that he had wrought for Israel. 8And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old. 9And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash. 10And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the work which he had wrought for Israel. 11And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and served the Baalim: 12and they forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves down unto them: and they provoked the LORD to anger. 13And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies. 15Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had spoken, and as the LORD had sworn unto them: and they were sore distressed. 16And the LORD raised up judges, which saved them out of the hand of those that spoiled them. 17And yet they hearkened not unto their judges, for they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so. 18And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them. 19But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way. 20And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel; and he said, Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice; 21I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died: 22that by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not. 23So the LORD left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.
