Judges 2

Israel Disobeys Yahweh
1And the angel of Yahweh went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, “I brought you up from Egypt, and I brought you to the land that I had promised to your ancestors.#Or “fathers” I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you. 2And as for you, do not make a covenant#Literally “cut a covenant” with the inhabitants of this land; break down their altars.’ But you did not listen to my voice. Why would you do such a thing?#Literally “What is this thing you have done?” 3Now I say, I will not drive them out from before you; they will become as thorns#Or “become snares;” some ancient manuscripts read “be adversaries” for you, and their gods will be a trap for you.” 4And as the angel of Yahweh spoke these words to all the Israelites,#Literally “sons/children of Israel” the people wept bitterly.#Literally “lifted up their voices and they wept” 5And they called the name of this place Bokim,#“Bokim” means “weepers” and there they sacrificed to Yahweh.
Joshua Dies
6And Joshua sent the people away, and the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” went each to their#Hebrew “his” own inheritance to take possession of the land. 7And the people served Yahweh all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who saw all the great work Yahweh had done for Israel. 8And Joshua son of Nun, servant of Yahweh, died at the age of one hundred and ten years.#Literally “a son of one hundred and ten years” 9They buried him within the border of his inheritance in Timnah-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim north of Mount Gaash. 10Moreover, that entire generation was gathered to their#Hebrew “his” ancestors,#Or “fathers” and another generation grew up after them who did not know Yahweh or the work he had done for Israel.#Judges 2:6–10 is repeated in Joshua 24:28–31
Israel Worships the Baals
11The Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and they served#Or “they worshiped” the Baals. 12They abandoned Yahweh the God of their ancestors,#Or “fathers” who brought them out from the land of Egypt. They followed#Literally “went after” other gods from the gods of the people who were around them; and they bowed down to them, and they provoked the anger of Yahweh. 13They abandoned Yahweh, and they served Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14So the anger of Yahweh was kindled#Literally “The nose of Yahweh became hot” against Israel, and he gave them into the hand of plunderers; and they plundered them, and he sold them into the hand of their enemies from all sides. They were unable to withstand their enemies any longer. 15Whenever#Literally “At all that” they went out, the hand of Yahweh was against them to harm them, just as Yahweh warned, and just as Yahweh had sworn to them. And they were very distressed.#Literally “it was very cramped for them”
16Then Yahweh raised up leaders,#Or “judges” and they delivered them from the hand of their plunderers. 17But they did not listen to their leaders,#Or “judges” but lusted after other gods and bowed down to them. They turned away quickly from the way that their ancestors#Or “fathers” went, who had obeyed the commandment of Yahweh; they did not do as their ancestors. 18And when Yahweh raised leaders#Or “judges” for them, Yahweh was with the leader,#Or “judge” and he delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the leader,#Or “judge” for Yahweh was moved by their groaning because of their persecutors and oppressors. 19But when the leader#Or “judge” died they relapsed and acted corruptly, more than their ancestors,#Or “fathers” following other gods, serving them,#Or “worshiping them” and bowing down to them. They would not give up their deeds or their stubborn ways. 20So the anger of Yahweh burned#Literally “So the nose of Yahweh became hot” against Israel, and he said, “Because this people transgressed my covenant that I commanded their ancestors,#Or “fathers” and have not obeyed my voice, 21I will not again drive out anyone from before them from the nations that Joshua left when he died, 22in order to test Israel whether or not they would observe the way of Yahweh, to walk in it just as their ancestors#Or “fathers” did.” 23So Yahweh left those nations; he did not drive them out at once, and he did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

Judges 2

Israel Rebuked
1Now the angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land which I have sworn to your fathers; and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you, 2and as for you, you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed Me; what is this you have done? 3Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they will #Some ancient mss read be adversaries, andbecome as thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you.’ ” 4When the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept. 5So they named that place #I.e. weepersBochim; and there they sacrificed to the Lord.
Joshua Dies
6When Joshua had dismissed the people, the sons of Israel went each to his inheritance to possess the land. 7The people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the Lord which He had done for Israel. 8Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred and ten. 9And they buried him in the territory of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. 10All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord, nor yet the work which He had done for Israel.
Israel Serves Baals
11Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord and #Or worshipedserved the Baals, 12and they forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; thus they provoked the Lord to anger. 13So they forsook the Lord and served Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14The anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He gave them into the hands of plunderers who plundered them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies. 15Wherever they went, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had spoken and as the Lord had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.
16Then the Lord raised up judges who delivered them from the hands of those who plundered them. 17Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they played the harlot after other gods and bowed themselves down to them. They turned aside quickly from the way in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do as their fathers. 18When the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge and delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed and afflicted them. 19But it came about when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their stubborn ways. 20So the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers and has not listened to My voice, 21I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died, 22in order to test Israel by them, whether they will keep the way of the Lord to walk in it as their fathers did, or not.” 23So the Lord allowed those nations to remain, not driving them out quickly; and He did not give them into the hand of Joshua.
