James 5

Woes on the Rich Who Oppress Others
1 Come now, you rich people, weep and cry aloud over the miseries that are coming upon you! 2Your wealth has rotted, and your clothing has become moth-eaten. 3Your gold and silver have become corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you, and it will consume your flesh like fire. You have stored up treasure in the last days. 4Behold, the wages that were held back by you from the workers who reap your fields cry out, and the cries of the reapers have come to the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5You have lived self-indulgently on the earth#Or “land” and have lived luxuriously. You have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter. 6You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous person; he does not resist you.
Exhortation to Patience
7Therefore be patient, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the soil, being patient concerning it until it receives the early and late rains. 8You also be patient. Strengthen your hearts, because the coming of the Lord is near. 9Brothers, do not complain against one another, in order that you may not be judged. Behold, the judge stands before the doors! 10Brothers, take as an example of perseverance and endurance the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11Behold, we consider blessed those who have endured. You have heard about the patient endurance of Job, and you saw the outcome from the Lord, that the Lord is compassionate and merciful. 12Now above all, my brothers, do not swear either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no, no, in order that you may not fall under judgment.
The Effective Prayer of Faith
13Is anyone among you suffering misfortune? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praise. 14Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the elders of the church and they should pray over him, anointing him with olive oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins he will be forgiven#Literally “it will be forgiven him”. 16Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much. 17Elijah was a human being#Literally “man,” but in a generic sense; the emphasis is not on Elijah’s masculine gender but his shared humanity with the same nature as us, and he prayed fervently#Literally “he prayed with prayer” for it not to rain, and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18And he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the earth produced its fruit.
19My brothers, if anyone among you should wander away from the truth and someone turns him back, 20he should know that the one who turns a sinner back from the error of his way will save that person’s#Literally “his,” but in context this refers to the sinner, not the person who turns the sinner back soul from death, and will cover over a great number of sins.

1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming on you. 2Your riches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten. 3Your gold and your silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be for a testimony against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up your treasure in the last days. 4Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Hosts.#5:4 Greek: Sabaoth (or Hebrew: Tze’va’ot) 5You have lived in luxury on the earth, and taken your pleasure. You have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter. 6You have condemned and you have murdered the righteous one. He doesn’t resist you.
7 Be patient therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient over it, until it receives the early and late rain. 8You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
9Don’t grumble, brothers, against one another, so that you won’t be judged. Behold, the judge stands at the door. 10Take, brothers, for an example of suffering and of perseverance, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11Behold, we call them blessed who endured. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and have seen the Lord in the outcome, and how the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
12 But above all things, my brothers, don’t swear—not by heaven, or by the earth, or by any other oath; but let your “yes” be “yes”, and your “no”, “no”, so that you don’t fall into hypocrisy.#5:12 TR reads “under judgment” instead of “into hypocrisy”
13 Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praises. 14Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective. 17Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it didn’t rain on the earth for three years and six months. 18He prayed again, and the sky gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.
19Brothers, if any among you wanders from the truth and someone turns him back, 20let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
