Highlighting the Sins and the Judgments of Israel
1And the word of Yahweh came#Literally “was” to me, saying,#Literally “to say” 2“And you, son of man,#Or “mortal,” or “son of humankind” will you judge? Will you judge the bloody city?#Literally “city of blood” Then you must make known to her all of her detestable things! 3And you must say, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “A city pouring out blood in the midst of her; its time has come,#Literally “to come time her its” and it made idols for itself, becoming unclean. 4By your blood that you poured out you have become guilty, and by your idols that you made you have become unclean, and you have brought your days near, and your appointed years have come.#Literally “and it came to years your” Therefore I have made you a disgrace for the nations and a laughingstock to all of the countries. 5The people near and the people far from you will make fun of you, the unclean and the terrified.#Literally “the unclean of the name the great of the panic” 6Look! The princes of Israel, each one according to his strength,#Or “influence” they are in you for the shedding of blood.#Literally “to shedding of blood” 7They have treated father and mother with contempt in you; they violated#Literally “they did with extortion” the alien with#Or “by” extortion; in the midst of you they mistreated the orphan and widow. 8You despised my holy objects; my Sabbaths you profaned. 9Slanderous men are among you#Literally “in you” to shed blood, and they, among you,#Literally “in you” eat upon the mountains; they do wickedness in the midst of you. 10They uncover the nakedness of a father among#Hebrew “in” you; they violate a woman unclean of menstruation among#Hebrew “in” you. 11And a man does a detestable thing with the wife of his neighbor, and a man defiles his daughter-in-law in wickedness, and a man sexually violates among#Hebrew “in” you his sister, the daughter of his father. 12They take a bribe among#Hebrew “in” you in order to shed blood; and you take usury, and you make gain from your neighbors by extortion, and so you have forgotten me, declares#Literally “declaration of” the Lord Yahweh. 13And look! I strike my hand for your ill-gotten gain that you have made and at your blood that was in the midst of you. 14Can your heart endure,#Or “hold up” or can your hands be strong at the days in which I am dealing with you? I, Yahweh, I have spoken, and I will act! 15I will scatter you among the nations, and I will disperse you through the countries, and I will purge your uncleanness from you. 16And I will be profaned by you before the eyes of the nations, and you will know that I am Yahweh.” ’ ”
17And the word of Yahweh came#Literally “was” to me, saying,#Literally “to say” 18“Son of man,#Or “mortal,” or “son of humankind” the house of Israel has become as silver dross to me; all of them are as bronze and tin and iron and lead in the midst of a furnace, even as silver dross, silver dross they became! 19Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Because all of you have become as silver dross, therefore look! I am gathering you to the midst of Jerusalem, 20like the gathering of silver and bronze and iron and lead and tin to the middle of a furnace to blow fire on it for melting. Thus I will gather in my anger and in my rage, and I will deposit#Literally “I will put/place” you, and I will melt you. 21And I will gather you, and I will blow on you with the fire of my wrath, and so I will melt you in the midst of her. 22Thus you will be melted like the melting of silver in the midst of a furnace, and you will know that I, Yahweh, I have poured out my rage on you.’ ” 23And the word of Yahweh came#Literally “was” to me, saying,#Literally “to say” 24“Son of man,#Or “mortal,” or “son of humankind” say to her, ‘You are a land not cleansed; it is not rained upon in the day of indignation.’ 25The conspiracy of its prophets in the midst of her is like a roaring lion that is tearing prey. They devour people, and they take wealth and treasure; they make its widows numerous in the midst of her. 26Its priests treat my law violently, and they profane my holy objects; they do not distinguish between a holy object and what is unholy, or between the clean and the unclean. They do not teach the difference, and they hide their eyes from my Sabbaths, and so I am profaned in the midst of them. 27Its officials are like wolves tearing prey in its midst, to pour out blood, to destroy people, to make dishonest gain. 28And for them its prophets plaster whitewash; they are seeing falseness and are practicing divination for them by lying, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh,’ and Yahweh has not spoken. 29They severely oppress the people of the land, and they committed robbery,#Literally “and they seized a robbed things” and they mistreated the needy and the poor, and they oppressed the alien without#Literally “with not” justice. 30And so I sought for them somebody, one repairing the wall and standing in the breach before me#Literally “to the face of me” on behalf of the land not to destroy it, but I did not find anyone, 31and so I poured out my indignation on them. With the fire of my wrath I destroyed them; I returned their way upon their head,” declares#Literally “declaration of” the Lord Yahweh.

Ezekiel 22
1¶ Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
2Now, thou son of man, wilt thou not judge, wilt thou not judge the city that spills innocent blood and cause her to know all her abominations?
3Then thou shalt say, Thus hath the Lord GOD said, City that sheds blood in the midst of thyself, that thy time may come, and that has made idols against thyself to defile thyself!
4In thy blood that thou hast shed thou hast sinned and hast defiled thyself with thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near and art come even unto thy years; therefore I have given thee in reproach unto the Gentiles, and in shame unto all the countries.
5 Those that are near and those that are far from thee shall mock thee, who art infamous and much vexed.
6Behold, the princes of Israel, each one according to their power, were in thee to shed blood.
7In thee they have despised father and mother; in the midst of thee they have dealt by oppression with the stranger; in thee they have vexed the fatherless and the widow.
8Thou hast despised my holy things and hast profaned my sabbaths.
9In thee are men that carry tales to shed blood; and in thee they eat upon the mountains; in the midst of thee they commit lewdness.
10In thee they have discovered their fathers’ nakedness; in thee they have forced the unclean menstruous woman.
11And one has committed abomination with his neighbour’s wife; and another has lewdly defiled his daughter-in-law; and another in thee has forced his sister, his father’s daughter.
12In thee they have taken bribes to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion and hast forgotten me, said the Lord GOD.
13Behold, therefore I have smitten my hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made and at thy blood which has been in the midst of thee.
14Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the Lord have spoken it and will do it.
15And I will scatter thee among the Gentiles and disperse thee in the countries and will consume thy filthiness out of thee.
16And thou shalt take thine inheritance in thyself in the sight of the Gentiles, and thou shalt know that I am the Lord.
17¶ And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
18Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross; they are all brass and tin and iron and lead in the midst of the furnace; they are become the dross of silver.
19Therefore thus hath the Lord GOD said: Because ye are all become dross, behold, therefore I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem.
20 As they gather silver and brass and iron and lead and tin into the midst of the furnace to blow the fire upon it to melt it, so will I gather you in my anger and in my fury, and I will cause you to rest, and melt you.
21I will gather you and blow upon you in the fire of my wrath, and ye shall be melted in the midst thereof.
22As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the midst thereof; and ye shall know that I the Lord have poured out my fury upon you.
23¶ And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
24Son of man, say unto her, Thou art not clean land, nor art thou sprinkled with rain in the day of indignation.
25 There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken treasures and honour; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof.
26Her priests have violated my law by force and have profaned my holy things; they have made no difference between the holy and the profane, neither have they showed the difference between the unclean and the clean and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.
27Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to follow their own greed.
28And her prophets have plastered them over with loose mud, prophesying vanity and divining lies unto them, saying: Thus hath the Lord GOD said, when the Lord has not spoken.
29The people of the land have used oppression and exercised robbery and have done violence unto the poor and needy; they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.
30And I sought for a man among them that should make up the hedge and stand in the gap before me for the land that I should not destroy it, but I found no one.
31Therefore have I poured out my indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath; I have recompensed their own way upon their heads, said the Lord GOD.
