Jerusalem a Useless Vine
1And the word of Yahweh came#Literally “was” to me, saying,#Literally “to say” 2“Son of man, how will the wood of the vine be better than#Literally “more than” any of the wood of#Literally “all of the wood of” the branch which is among the trees of the forest?#Or “wood” 3Can wood be taken from it to make anything, or can they take a tent peg from it to hang on it any object?#Or “vessel” 4Look! It is given to the fire as fuel. The fire will consume two of its ends, and its middle will be charred. Is it useful for anything? 5Look! When it is in perfect condition,#Literally “In being it perfect” it will not be used for anything, how much less#Literally “indeed” when the fire has consumed it#Literally “for if fire has consumed it” and it is charred; and then can it be used again for anything? 6Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: Just like#Literally “As that” the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest#Or “wood” which I gave to the fire for fuel, so I have given the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 7And I will set my face against them. From the fire they mayescape,#Literally “go out” but the fire will yet consume them, and they will know that I am Yahweh when I set my face against them.#Literally “in to set me my face against them” 8And I will make the land a desolation because they acted very unfaithfully!”#Literally “they displayed infidelity” declares#Literally “declaration of” the Lord Yahweh.

Ezekiel 15

Jerusalem Is a Useless Vine
1Some time later, the Lord said:
2Ezekiel, son of man, what happens to the wood of a grapevine after the grapes have been picked? It isn't like other trees in the forest, 3because the wood of a grapevine can't be used to make anything, not even a small peg to hang things on. 4It can only be used as firewood. But after its ends are burnt and its middle is charred, it can't be used for anything. 5The wood is useless before it is burned, and afterwards, it is completely worthless.
6I, the Lord God, promise that just as the wood of a grapevine is burned as firewood, 7I will punish the people of Jerusalem with fire. Some of them have escaped one destruction, but soon they will be completely burned. And when that happens, you, Ezekiel, will know that I am the Lord. 8I will make their country an empty wasteland, because they have not been loyal to me. I, the Lord God, have spoken.
