1 Timothy 1

Greeting
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, 2to Timothy, my true child in the faith. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Instructions for Timothy in Ephesus
3Just as I urged you when I#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“traveled”) which is understood as temporal traveled to Macedonia, remain in Ephesus, so that you may instruct certain people not to teach other doctrine, 4and not to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which cause useless speculations rather than God’s plan that is by faith. 5But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a faith without hypocrisy, 6from which some have deviated, and have turned away into fruitless discussion, 7wanting to be teachers of the law, although they#*Here “although” is supplied as a component of the participle (“understand”) which is understood as concessive do not understand either the things which they are saying or the things concerning which they are speaking confidently.
8But we know that the law is good, if anyone makes use of it lawfully, 9knowing this, that the law is not given for a righteous person but for the lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and totally worldly, for the one who kills his father and the one who kills his mother, for murderers, 10sexually immoral people, homosexuals, kidnappers, liars, perjurers, and whatever#Literally “if anything” else is opposed to sound teaching, 11according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God that I was entrusted with.
Paul’s Thankfulness for the Mercy Shown to Him
12I give thanks#Literally “I have thankfulness” to the one who strengthens me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me faithful, placing me into ministry,#Or “service” 13although I#*Here “although” is supplied as a component of the participle (“was”) which is understood as concessive was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, but I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14and the grace of our Lord abounded with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15The saying is trustworthy and worthy of all acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 16But because of this I was shown mercy, in order that in me foremost, Christ Jesus might demonstrate his total patience, for an example for those who are going to believe in him for eternal life. 17Now to the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, to the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever#Literally “to the ages of the ages”. Amen.
Paul’s Charge to Timothy
18I am setting before you this instruction, Timothy my child, in accordance with the prophecies spoken long ago about you, in order that by them you may fight the good fight, 19having faith and a good conscience, which some, because they#*Here “because” is supplied as a component of the participle (“have rejected”) which is understood as causal have rejected these, have suffered shipwreck concerning their faith, 20among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, in order that they may be taught not to blaspheme.

1 Timothy 1

Correcting False Teaching
1Paul, an apostle (special messenger, personally chosen representative) of Christ Jesus by the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed) our Hope [the fulfillment of our salvation],
2to Timothy, my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace [inner calm and spiritual well-being] from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3As I urged you when I was on my way to Macedonia, stay on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain individuals not to teach any different doctrines, 4nor to pay attention to legends (fables, myths) and endless genealogies, which give rise to useless speculation and meaningless arguments rather than advancing God’s program of instruction which is grounded in faith [and requires surrendering the entire self to God in absolute trust and confidence]. 5But the goal of our instruction is love [which springs] from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6Some individuals have wandered away from these things into empty arguments and useless discussions, 7wanting to be teachers of the Law [of Moses], even though they do not understand the terms they use or the subjects about which they make [such] confident declarations.
8Now we know [without any doubt] that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully and appropriately, 9understanding the fact that law is not enacted for the righteous person [the one in right standing with God], but for lawless and rebellious people, for the ungodly and sinful, for the irreverent and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10for sexually immoral persons, for homosexuals, for #1:10 I.e. those who exploit other people for evil or selfish reasons.kidnappers and slave traders, for liars, for perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, 11according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.
12I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has granted me [the needed] strength and made me able for this, because He considered me faithful and trustworthy, putting me into service [for this ministry], 13even though I was formerly a blasphemer [of our Lord] and a persecutor [of His church] and a shameful and outrageous and violent aggressor [toward believers]. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted out of ignorance in unbelief. 14The grace of our Lord [His amazing, unmerited favor and blessing] flowed out in superabundance [for me, together] with the faith and love which are [realized] in Christ Jesus. 15#1:15 An unusual clause used only five times in the NT. See also 3:1; 4:9; 2 Tim 2:11; Titus 3:8.This is a faithful and trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance and approval, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost. 16Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost [of sinners], Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example or pattern for those who #1:16 Or were destined to believe.would believe in Him for eternal life. 17Now to the King of the ages [eternal], immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
18This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, so that [inspired and aided] by them you may fight the good fight [in contending with false teachers], 19keeping your faith [leaning completely on God with absolute trust and confidence in His guidance] and having a good conscience; for some [people] have rejected [their moral compass] and have made a shipwreck of their faith. 20Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have #1:20 I.e. expelled from the safety of the church.handed over to Satan, so that they will be disciplined and taught not to blaspheme.
