Immoral Behavior and Church Discipline
1 It is reported everywhere that there is sexual immorality among you, and sexual immorality of such a kind which does not even exist among the Gentiles, so that someone has the wife of his father. 2And you are inflated with pride, and should you not rather have mourned, so that the one who has done this deed would be removed from your midst? 3For although I#*Here “although” is supplied as a component of the participle (“am absent”) which is understood as concessive am absent in body but present in spirit, I have already passed judgment on the one who has done this in this way, as if I#*Here “if” is supplied as a component of the participle (“were present”) which is understood as conditional were present. 4In the name of our Lord Jesus, when#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“are assembled”) you are assembled, and my spirit, together with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5I have decided#*The words “I have decided” are implied from the statement “I have already passed judgment” in v. 3 to hand over such a person to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, in order that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
6Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole batch of dough? 7Clean out the old leaven in order that you may be a new batch of dough, just as you are unleavened. For Christ our Passover has been sacrificed. 8So then, let us celebrate the feast, not with the old leaven or with the leaven of wickedness and sinfulness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9I wrote to you in the letter not to associate with sexually immoral people. 10By no means did I mean the sexually immoral people of this world or the greedy people and swindlers or idolaters, since then you would have to depart out of the world. 11But now I have written to you not to associate with any so-called brother, if he is a sexually immoral person or a greedy person or an idolater or an abusive person or a drunkard or a swindler—with such a person not even to eat. 12For what is it to me to judge those outside? Should you not judge those inside? 13But those outside God will judge. Remove the evil person from among yourselves#Literally “from you of them”.

The Judgment of Immorality
1It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles, that a man has his father’s wife. # Lev 18:8; Dt 22:30 2But you are arrogant. Instead you should have mourned, so that he who has done this deed might be removed from among you. # 1Co 5:13; 2Co 7:7–11 3For indeed, though absent in body but present in spirit, # 2Co 5:8; Col 2:5; 1Th 2:17 I have already, as if I were present, judged him who has done this deed, 4in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. When you are assembled, along with my spirit, in the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5deliver him to Satan # 1Ti 1:20 for the destruction of the flesh, so that the spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord Jesus. # 1Co 1:8
6Your boasting is not good. # Jas 4:16 Do you not know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch? # Gal 5:9 7Therefore purge out the old yeast, that you may be a new batch, since you are unleavened. # Ex 12:15 For even Christ, our Passover, # Mk 14:12 has been sacrificed for us. 8Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old yeast, nor with the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread # Ex 12:15; Dt 16:3 of sincerity and truth.
9I wrote to you in my letter not to keep company with sexually immoral people. # 2Co 6:14; Eph 5:11 10Yet I did not mean the sexually immoral people of this world, # 1Co 10:27 or the covetous and extortioners, or the idolaters, since you would then need to go out of the world. 11But I have written to you not to keep company with any man who is called a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner. Do not even eat with such a person. # Mt 18:17; Ro 16:17; 2Th 3:6
12For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? # Mk 4:11 Do you not judge those who are inside? 13But God judges those who are outside. Therefore “put away from among yourselves that wicked person.” # Dt 13:5; 17:7 # 5:13 Dt 17:7; 19:19; 21:21; 22:21; 24:7.
